Thought I'd post this up since I'd seen a few discussions in threads regarding this.

You may not be aware that Photobucket has recently suspended all third-party image hosting as a free service, and is now seeking $399 from users who wish to continue using its service to host images on third-party sites, forums such as this one for example - full story http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/technology-40492668

As a result, you may have noticed that many images which you could previously view on this site, such as progress thread images, are now no longer available, and instead have been replaced with this:

full-37311-9375-capture.jpg

In order to avoid this, you will either have to
1) pay the $399 (in which case, paypal me £50 as you clearly have more money than sense) or
2) move your images to another free image hosting service.

Personally, I began using http://imgur.com/ months ago as 'free' Photobucket was terrible, but there are other services available such as:

https://imageshack.us/
https://www.flickr.com/

and I'm sure a few others.

Good post Sean. Photobucket is absolutely terrible in 'free' mode and will gladly try one of these new sites mentioned.

Good post mate.

Photobucket should burn in hell.

Never used it. Knew from day one it's utter crap. Designed to market to people more than actually be functional. They just had a snappy name and people fell for it, seriously that's it. Even when they came out there were better options available.

And they've got form here. There was a time when they changed how your photos were named so out of the blue all your hot links stopped working.

$399???!!! It's an utterly ridiculous amount and no where near fair.

Feel sorry for the people who have been affected by this. I'm sure a few have had some really stressful moments.

Money grabbing scum!

From free to $399 is financial and commercial suicide, and could be the breaking of the company - utterly bonkers. However, it does highlight our reliance on the sites and companies that entice us with free services. Nothing lasts forever.

Agree Kev, Tapatalk is a bloody good platform to use when it comes to uploading pics.

i never knew all this- was there not a story where tapatalk took over a forum and wanted to start charging ...cant remember the full story....

I thought they were going down the pan based on the increase in marketing on the website. 10 annoying pop ups before you can do anything, clearly no strategy behind the business as the efforts to monetise it look like they were planned on the back of a fag packet.

Such a shame that they've gone down this route whole-sale, instead of perhaps offering a premium service - larger storage, no adverts etc. As above, they could end up losing a lot of users/customers over this. I've no objection to companies wanting to make money for providing a service, but to go from one extreme to the other is ridiculous.

FWIW at the time of writing this post, my photos on PB seem unaffected - I think this could be possibly because I use so little of my allocated storage...

Mine are OK, for now.... I've saved them all elsewhere just in case as even getting onto Photobucket thesedays is hit and miss, never mind the hundreds of pop-up ads you get once in.

That's good that yours are alright too, although well played on saving them elsewhere - there's always the chance that PB are rolling out this 'upgrade offer' to everyone over time, so we might get it eventually....

With regards the ads, I installed AdBlocker onto my browser and it's made a huge difference to PB, as well as a lot of other sites too.

It's coming mate. You won't escape it.

They stage things like this to keep the backlash about it as quiet as possible.

Like Instagram has done recently with adverts. They make sure to only roll it out to a small amount of people at once so the complaints are at a manageable level.

Frustrating when companies do this and then want the earth to use any service. Why don't they go down the whats app route and charge a couple of pounds? That way people don't mind paying it so with millions of users you make good money. When they charge silly money the average Joe is just going to run.

I don't understand the logic.

Imageshack also needs a subscription for info to share to host to forums etc.. cheaper than ransombucket tho....
