Anyone have a resonated Milltek?

Winner - POTM March 2018
Hey all,

As above, I have had a 200 system with tips since February to fit and just never got round to it with other expenses. I dont dislike the stock exhaust note but its been gummed up more times than my nans fake teeth and its bound to fail again at any point. Plus, the Milltek is a lighter system but worried it might be drony.

Has anyone got a resonated Milltek who can give an opinion? What about a video?

Thanks in advance!

Doug

I bought a brand new Milltek resonated cat-back about a year ago to replace the stock exhaust on my 200. Well, actually I bought a second hand Ktec first but didn't keep it more than a week as it was far too loud for me. I do a lot driving for work so I was looking for an exhaust just a touch louder than the standard. Mind you my I also have a Toyosport manifold which slightly increases the noise.

Anyway, Milltek was good in the beginning. It was just a touch louder than the standard and one couldn't tell there was an aftermarket exhaust fitted unless they're familiar with these cars. It was actually a little too quiet if not warmed up. After about a thousands miles as the exhaust 'broke in', it got sweetly louder. Not droney or annoying but now you could hear a really nice note both from inside and outside. It was just the loudness I wanted and was very happy with it. I'll PM you a video from this time.

The problem is that it got progressively louder. After 8 thousand miles it became almost as loud as a Ktec when properly warmed up. The difference between cold and warm became more apparent; It is kind of OK when cold but becomes too loud to my liking once it is properly hot. Don't get me wrong, it doesn't sound trashy, it does indeed sound great when you're 'on it' but it is just too loud for a long trip on the motorway.

I've had the exhaust inspected for cracks / loose connections etc. but it turned out just fine. Then I contacted the Road Runner Motorsports who then directed me to an engineer at Milltek. I popped by Milltek headquarters in Derby when I was in the area, hoping that they'd look into the exhaust in their workshop but instead I was told it sounded normal, it was a loud car anyway and that they were too busy to use the workshop to actually investigate the problem etc. Long story short we agreed that we'd keep in touch and I'd come back when the
workshop is free but after many months, I'm still chasing them with no result.

So in summary while the exhaust sounds good, in my experience it is quite loud and customer care is rubbish. I'm pretty sure there is something wrong with mine though because I've never had another exhaust that became so much louder over time. It'd be great to hear your experience if you end up fitting it.

To add to the above, I had an R27 I bought off my friend, he had a Milltek resonated put on it, about 5k miles when I bought it, it sounded really nice as you describe it, unfortunately the car was wrote off (I got rear ended on the motorway after only 5 weeks of ownership).

I then bought another 197, this also had a Milltek Resonated on it (coincidence, I wasn't after one), this had been on a while (not sure about mileage, but from condition and lack of receipt it looks like it had been on a while).
This was really loud, to the point I sold it and I have gone back to standard (I do 20k miles a year, nearly all motorway to and from work), I also thought it was myself with an old duff exhaust, but after I sold it I read similar on the FB page and now you, so clearly there is something isn't so right!

Interesting you had the same experience, I always thought there was a problem with the particular one I had! I will probably end up selling mine and go back to standard as well...

Yeah I thought I had a duff one, but then when I read about the few others saying similar I knew I wasn't the only one.
Yeah I went back standard, I love it, yes the Milltek sounded great on a country road blast, but when you drive nearly all your miles for commuting many motorway miles, it isn't worth the headache!

Interesting hearing there are a few reports of this. The whole reason for me changing was to get something that wouldn't need repairing every 5 minutes and not be much louder (always expect a slight increase) but I dont fancy it being loud. I dont do a lot of motorway journeys but the ones I do are often 2-3 hours at a time so being drony and loud is frustrating.

I could chop the original and test fit the Milltek, worried I may not be able to fit the original back on as I know it needs to be cut in several places to get it out.

I was literally about to order a resonated Milltek for my 197. Having second thoughts now. Anyone have any views on a resonated Scorpion? I just want an exhaust that sounds a bit better than standard but not much louder.

I had the resonated Scorpion and was very happy with it. It is noticeably louder than OEM, but not to the point where it's annoying or 'antisocial'. Sounds good when you give it the beans. Motorway-wise, I never found it too droney and I never had any complaints from passengers when they were in the car with me.

I bought mine second hand and regret that - it was a pig to fit and turns out that one of the silencers had a rattly baffle... Get brand new if you do decide on one.

Fitted Scorpion resonated. Sounds good, not too much louder (as my car had the centre section replaced with a straight pipe by the previous owner). It does however drone a bit more than I’d like :worried: Hopefully with a few miles on it it will drone a bit less? If not I may get the centre pipe modified with a larger silencer as the Scorpion centre silencer is tiny.

Glad you got it all sorted and you're reasonably happy with it. Hopefully with time it will bed in a bit and won't drone as much. Mine was used, however the first couple of times on the motorway I thought it was droney, however I either got used to it or it changed slightly with even more mileage...

So I still haven't fitted this but am planning to at some point soon! Anyone else fitted one?

Hey everyone, so, I had the Miltek fitted today. Fitting was relatively easy and considering it was 2nd hand it fitted well. We had to butcher the tips a bit to get them to fit (200 exhaust on a 197 with tips)

First impressions are good. Nice burble at idle, quiet around 2k and sounds a bit fruitier when pushing it. A tad louder when warm, only a tad drony around 3k. Should point out this was driving with the rear seats down too so will be a little quieter with them up.

Although haven't been on the motorway with it yet so that will be interesting. And not sure on the tips (no photo yet as its dark) so may get them changed.

As it was 2nd hand (unsure of mileage) I hope it doesnt get loud and noisy!

Any updates on this? Just bought a 200, not looking to do much to it at the moment, but might consider an exhaust once the funds have built back up

Its not bad to be honest. I appear to have a lucky batch, Ive had no issues with it getting louder. Its a different kettle of fish to the stock exhaust. The stock unit sounds flat whatever you do, only getting louder on the motorway. The resonated Miltek, from inside the car, is quieter than stock when pootling around, at 2k rpm I think its quite subdued. I suspect from the outside its louder but as its a deeper sound I suspect it gets blocked out naturally a little easier. So far, so good.

When pushing on you hear it get a bit deeper and louder. Not bad, and its not a great sounding exhaust but at high RPM's it sings quite well.

On the motorway however it gets rather noisy and a little drony. From what I have heard of it so far, when at partial throttle its not loud. When driving on the motorway at say 70, as the car is so low geared it means constant throttle (except downhill sections) and that makes the noise tiresome. At 50 its fine, at 60 its ok but 70+ is just a bit on the loud side for me. I have just got back from an almost 4 hour motorway drive and I wouldnt want to do it again soon. Saying that, if its a fun car or daily like mine, and you dont need to travel hours on the motorway all the time then Id recommend it.
