Anyone had a valve replaced?

Looking to know roughly how long this took so I can estimate the cost, I may have a bent valve that would need changing...

the list could be huge, its going to need stripping down. if you've possibly bent 1, there'll definately be more... depends how bad it is also. you could have runined the piston on impact. theres so many factors, ontop of if a valve is bent then the guide/seat for the valves could be damaged also.

If its touched the piston then you can wave goodbye to the head aswell. As mentioned above you'd be extremely lucky if it was one valve

What caused it?

its not a certain yet.. but i had some issues with the timing after cambelt was changed. This was corrected and was only a tooth out. But had it on a dyno and it was underpowered and shown a missfire, and after the garage have checked all the basic options its now going to have a compression test etc, so cannot really think what else it could be?

My belt slipped by one tooth and it took out all 8 exhaust valves, holed one piston and destroyed the head. Didn't even bother trying to fix it just went for a complete new lump.

well that's the positive news I wanted...

its only a small missfire, I didnt even notice it until they plugged it on the system, hope its nothing too bad then : /

yeah that's what is going through my head now...

I will wait for the compression test and bore scope results and hope for the best

On the other hand I had a cambelt go years back and it just needed a bit of sanding on the the head, well 2 in fact and some new valves.

Wouldn't expect much change from a grand tho

it ran 180 on the dyno when they noticed the missfire. I would hope it nothing too bad if it made that power?

what sort of prices do engines sell for now, is it cheaper to replace than fix as Angel did?

Most stock 197s run between 175-185 on the flywheel, running 180 with a missfire is kinda weird.

A friend's 197 jumped one tooth and he went with for new cylinder head/valves but not the whole lump. Most efficient repair option would depend on your mileage/condition of the engine; but you still don't know the extent of the damage so i would just cross my fingers for now.:thumbup1:

How long after you had the cambelt done was the problem found? Surely if it's a badly fitted belt then you should be taking it back to the garage and kicking up a fuss. I know I would be.

compression test first...

its not a big job to change/replace a valve or valves once the head is off

the REAL damage is when the head breaks off and can punch a hole in the piston but don't worry to much on that as normally the pistons are fine get plenty in work that bend valves but the pistons are fine...

I have had some feedback and compression is low on all 4, but a lot lower on 1 and 4... The current view is that at some point in its life its potentially had a cambelt snap and its not been rebuilt very well.

Scope didnt show anything obvious so the next step is to remove the head and test the valve seating.

Looks like a big job afterall...

It didn't feel right from the day I got it back, but I was assured it was all OK, but I knew something was not correct so it wasn't driven for long, probably 2 weeks but driven very easy. The issue I had was the garage were blaming a sensor being out, and guaranteed me the timing was correct, however when I later realised it was out it was corrected ASAP by a specialist.

Who's dyno did you get 180bhp on? I can't see it making that sort of power with low compression on all 4 cylinders. How low are we talking anyway? Did they give you any figures?

The car is in ktec, they haven't shown me the graph, they said it was around 180, but its in for new cams and on the before run it made the low power and they noticed something was not right.

It made in order 100 180 180 100

Cheers Gez, I am going down to the garage next week to do some car courtesy car swaps, I was going to discuss the option of just ripping the engine out. That gives me a good idea on cost didn't realise they were so cheap, seems a little cost for the engine?
