Not 100% sure on this but gut feel says the answer is that these should be point down slightly. As I know a fair few people have melted their diffusers with after market exhausts fitted in correctly.

Don't quite know the distance but it will have done around 15 miles. Only above 30 is when the light comes on.

Vapour blasting would be my go to for cleaning metal components. If you want to do it yourself I've seen a few people use oven cleaner to some effect.
