200T: EVO test Clio 200T v Corsa VXR clubsport

I used to have one back in the day. December 07 until March 09. I got a Friday built car though ie. not the most reliable so got rid.

Said I'll have another one one day.

this is the reason i dont like where new cars are going, to quiet, too soft, less engaging, less to do as computers do it all.

ill keep the clio 197 for real driving and have something like a new golf for everyday use.

If the Brembo's are spongy(er) in the VXR, it's down to anything and everything exepct the Bremo caliper itself. It is also not directly comparable with the Clios calipers, all the other components in the system mean the caliper is much less an influencing factor when comparing 2 cars. Only mention this as it's the same as when I've read a few times people saying the brakes are better in the new Clio despite not having Brembo's. The caliper, whether it is a Brembo/4-pot or not, is a pretty insiginifacnt component that yes it probably does have better brakes on the new Clio. That doesn't mean it wouldn't be better with Brembo's, but the only way to compare is on the same car when the other components are also all the same - not compairing between 2 different cars.

All calipers have a piston area and this needs matching to the master cylinder size and a front to rear bias which is influenced by this, the amount of servo assistance is another important one, pad material is absolutley crucial, disc size or course. All those things are way more important than if you caliper was machined from a billet or not

That said, if I do buy a GT86, the first mod I'm doing is STI calipers and 2 piece discs! But only because 4-pots look so good, I have a brake fetish for sure!!

Well EVO's tagline is 'the thrill of driving' so the 200T was never going to do too well because it isn't as fun as the old 200 and that's purely what EVO focus on LOL. But in Renault's defence, the 200T is still a big step forward. It is a much better all-round car and I think a fantastic package for the price, it's just for a different market than the previous models. It accelerates faster, covers ground faster, is more comfortable, more practical, has more technology, is easier to live with, better fuel consumption, half price tax, more torque, better built and still has the fantastic brake/engine/chassis combo they are renowned for, but it's not quite as engaging...the last point being the one that every journalist short of Chris Harris has pretty much solely focussed on which is a shame for it's reputation. I think it's great what they've achieved. I thought i'd hate it based on the reviews but couldn't have been more impressed.

Just depends what you want at the end of the day but I wish most of the reviews were a bit more balanced or that people addressed the fact that this car is clearly made for a different market. I owned and tracked a Westfield Megabusa for 5 years so anything with doors and windows feels a bit numb to me so I don't notice a difference between new and old 200  They both feel really good.

Each to their own...impressive laptime from the Corsa though.

Also got to consider the VXR is now a 7 year old car/platform where the Clio is essentially brand new so fair play to the vaux.

lets see if i can get my 200T round the same track in less than 1:30.00 in august this year

the clio "platform" is essentially the mk3 platform so is early 2006...makes it the same as the vxr...
