Cambelt change by a friend

Hi lads, my mate has said he will do my cambelt change for me in December when its due. He's a SEAT Technician so I was wondering if you had any advice or anything that I need to tell him to be carefull of etc? Anything different on a Renault Sport compared to your usual cambelt change?

I have told him you need the specific Renault timing tools which he said he can get so thats not a problem.

He's doing the cambelt, Aux belt, water pump, MOT and Service (costly time of year lol)

Cheers guys, appreciate any responses!

risky if he's never worked on renaults before i'd say matey,he'll need a renault sport timing tool to lock the cams,if the timing is even slightly out on these engines you'll lose a fair bit of power

Not worth the risk of falling out with him if he buggers your engine up Chris. :worried:

No matter if he's good with SEAT's, so many garages who are ''good'' end up timing these engines incorrectly. Unless he's had experience with a 1*2-200 engine in the past then I wouldn't even entertain the thought of letting him near it. Having the timing tools is one thing, knowing how to use them correctly is something else altogether. I know time served Renault techs' who don't like doing these engines...

there are also discrepancy's in belt length that mean some should not be done exactly by the book.

My mate works in a 'back street garage' and he changed mine no problem, he said you dont need any special tools. The car ran fine afterwards. He's going to be changing my 172 belts soon

o yes you do matey, sure litchy had his schricks fitted by a mate and had to spend alot of money at RS Tuning doing it all again to get things right,i also suffered a similar fate trying to save a couple of quid when i had my catcams fitted, trust me its not worth penny pinching when it comes to cam timing on these engines, simply take it to someone who knows what they are doing and there aren't that many

Mine's due next month. I'm going to take it to Birchdown.

Chris, If you wouldn't mind taking yours there the day before just so it's fresh in their mind how to do it, that would be great

I'll be fitting my own cambelt kit soon, hopefully all will be fine and I've got all the right tools. I like the idea of different cams but if I was to get some I wouldn't change them myself as when your changing the belt you only lock the timing but when changing cam as far as I'm aware you would need to set the timing. Correct me if I'm wrong please

There are plenty of stories on here of people getting cambelt changes from non-renaultsport specialists and ending loosing 10-20bhp. Just take it to a specialist, getting the timing right isn't easy.

Also, add crank pulley + bolt to your list. It's due at the same time as the cambelt but most places don't change it.

you could/can change the belt without any tools....but why take the chance - and its harder to do!

it also assumes the belt was fitted/timed correctly the first time...

they're not too bad to do, l did mine in a couple of hours no probs. l've also done several 172s and 182s including swapping engines and gearboxes in both models and from one model to another ! will do my third this week tomorrow.
