Two new lower ball joints

I had my full drivers side hub carrier replaced on my 197 the other week for £300. Could have got it done cheaper, but needed it doing ASAP. It has made a noticible difference in handling.

R sport have the joints in stock now, I'm doing my 2 just now. Its not really that bad a job to do, well the second one wasn't anyway. The first was a bit of a learning curve.

Strip the hub down into its individual parts and go from there. I heated up the hub on the first one and used a drift to get the joint out, its not really all that tight in there. On the second one i didn't even heat the hub piece up. The worst job was getting the little bolt out at the bottom of the pinch joint, they were solid so were cut and drilled out. One of my wheel bearings is away as well so thats getting done at the same time.

Another company you can try is Bolsover Car Care in Chesterfield - speak to Mark. I had one side done recently and they charged me £120. They just needed a couple of weeks notice so they could order the part in. Great service and they are RS specialists.

I got mine from R sport
took them to bolsover
mark sorted them
both sides for £120

perfection!

Hi gang, just had MOT advisory 'front suspension has slight play in a lower suspension ball joint offside front'. On my 197. I thought something was up as any uneven road surface causes clunking noise. (I think it's more than slight play and is on it's way out) I've seen on here replacing these is expensive. Question is, I have a valid 'Mechanical and Breakdown' policy and although I've double checked the long list of excluded items there's no mention of ball joints. Car not done 40,000, am gonna ring em in the morning but don't want to get fobbed off with 'usual wear and tear or normal deterioration clause'. What's my chances do you think? Got the cover thru Evans H. (I know ) but I would think one of their Renault dealerships would be happy overcharging the guarantee issuer for doing the work. Cheers for any advice, soz for the long post.

If you end up having to sort it yourself then contact Mark Black, he's now set up on his own.

Mate before you go any further contact renault Uk. Had both of mine done free of charge 61 plate with 23k on clock. Any passenger side shock replaced free as well ! If u have a renault service history that will be even better for ur claim . Good luck

I got mine also from R sport at Wimbledon, I had to fit one at Rockingham for the first round earlier this year after the first race, there not the worse job on the car but I now always keep 1 in my camper freezer just in case

Waiting to hear back from Renault UK, my mechanical and breakdown policy doesn't cover it 'normal wear and tear'. Surprise surprise. Not holding my breath but wouldn't have expected it would need replacing under 40,000, car been well looked after and not had the thrashing I thought they were built for, but maybe iam expecting too much. Tho I see on here quite a few 197/200 owners have had the same issue. Renault say it's not something they're aware of, anyone know different it might help my case. Cheers

Bull****, every single person I've spoke to at Renault know all about the ball joints, mechanics and sales people. It's a very known issue, as is the ropey gearboxes.

Thought so, I'll have a chat with michala at R tomo, I knew about the gbox probs so iam hoping regular gearbox oil changes will be helping. Plus it's a later 197 (2009) and I understand they had fixed the issue by then.

Renault UK once again feel there is not a problem with that part failing prematurely. Very politely fobbed off.

******s. I think I may need to replace one on my car too. Are there any in stock anywhere yet? Surely there's a market for an upgraded 'race' version of these? Like the Honda Civic type r as they go on those as well and I think you get the same issue with buying the part from Honda but you can buy uprated ones from several suppliers.

Lewis , if you come across any then let me know. Iam gonna check out some recommend garages and price up, don't think I'll be using a Renault dealership as they charge silly money.
