Loose Gear Knob

Looking for some advice…

I removed the gear knob to take off some trim, now it keeps coming off in my hand whilst driving. Has anyone else had a similar issue or is there a chance that something is broken or worn?

I’ve given it a good whack with a rub mallet but that didn’t work.

I want to avoid gluing it in case I want to take it off again in the future.

Any suggestions?

It could be the plastic insert that's in the knob itself, I believe you can buy it from eBay/autodoc etc, only a couple quid
