Improving a paint repair?

Hi!
I have a Nimbus RS197 and I've noticed a paint repair on my drivers door which looks like a result of a botched break-in at some point in the past

The colour match is spot on but now that I've spotted this I keep focussing on the finish of the door which is a little orange-peely compared with the rest of the car.

What would the experts on here recommend to try and improve this? Would a professional machine polish help? Perhaps a local body shop could improve the finish? Maybe I could buy some specialist products and have a go myself...I was going to rub the door down with T-Cut and clay but that might make matters worse....

What do you think? At least the car is buried in snow for now which stops me fretting!!

depends how bad the "orange peel" effect is - usually its a wet-sand jobbie to flat it off and then machine polish to get the shine back - but its not a home diy job - takes time and experience to perfect

you could try having it machined poilshed - that could improve it quite a bit if a harsh cut compound is used

Could I just ask a local body shop to work on it? I accept that a professional detailer would do a much better job but they'd want to do the entire car....could get pricey :001_rolleyes:

A detailer would do just the door if that's all you were prepared to pay for.
A detailer is more about the finnished product than a body shop. It's a body shop that has created the problem in the first place.

Are you sure it's not just the standard paint finish.? As when they leave the factory they have orange peel.

Yes I'm sure. The job is very well done but very close scrutiny shows that the drivers door (between bump strip and window) has been painted. The wing, rear quarter and bottom of the door are fine. I think a small section of the painted section of the top of the door has also been repainted. Obviously this was done some time ago as there are a few minor marks on the door from day-to-day use which are not new (a few small chips).

My guess is a slightly cack-handed break-in at some point in the car's life but - as a paintwork perfectionist - I'd like to try to improve the door. The rest of the car is in fabulous condition....

I'll try to locate a detailer in the Berkshire area and see what they think....anyone have any recommendations?

Thanks for that..those guys can work miracles. I just checked out their sites and valet magic seem to be particularly excellent. I may book the car in for one of their free 20 minute paintwork appraisals...could get expensive though!!

Hi DrDx,

Robbie from Valet Magic has asked me to let you know that he would be more than happy to take a look at this for you.

His number is 07817 922 095

I can highly recommend his work too - he has done some incredible details - you can see some of his work in 'The Studio' section on Detailing World.

You'll be in safe hand.

Hope this helps.

Cheers,

Russ.
