Gearbox noise

When I accelerate to high revs and release the gas pedal and let it slow down on the engine I hear a strange noise coming the gearbox.. It sounds a bit like having the window slightly openend at high speed but then coming from the engine bay. It's a constant sound and decreases when the rpm's drop. It only occurs after hard acceleration. Gearbox works great though, I don't have any problems getting it into gear or the common crushing synchro's.

I bought the car a month ago and it's my first 197 so I don't have any reference on what is common or not. Does anyone know what this could be, if it is harmful and what I can do to prevent it becoming worse?

It sounds a bit like this, although not as intense.

Thanks a lot!

Wouldn't worry about it. It's known to be normal for these boxes.

Yes they are just a bit noisy. I found it really annoying and off putting at first but now I have tuned it out and ignore it.

there is some transmission whine when on the over-run with them

if its idling and you dipp the clutch and there isn't much difference in its "noise" then I wouldn't worry - if theres a marked difference it can point to the mainshaft
bearings on their way out
