Firstly, "clunking" is a great word isn't it? Well not when it's describing a problem. I have a "clunk" from somewhere in the wheel area. It only sees to happen at very low speeds such as when manoeuvring to park, any ideas?
Just to expand on the reply above - if it is a ball joint you might also get a groaning noise when you turn the wheel to full lock when stationary?? A clunk could be potentially many things though...
If you lift the car and shake the front wheels. If there's play left to right, but none vertically that should confirm the lower balljoint. That's what I found on mine at least
