Today is the anniversary of Pierre Levagh’s 155mph crash at Le-Man that killed 83 spectators. In the days before crash barriers the crazy thing is they didn't even stop the race.

Deaths in motorsport are always shocking and sad but when you look back in motorsport history it just shows how far saftey has come on in the sport. Only recently some fans were injured at the TT after a bike hit the crowd promoting calls for increased safety but how far can safety go before the fun of the sport is diluted. Afterall it is the danger/risk element that is one of the main appeals of motorsport.

It does seem wrong that they didn't stop the race but after watching the documentary you can kind of see why they didn't. Imagine all of those people at le mans trying to get out if the race ended as the rescue services were trying to get in. It just wouldn't have worked and more lives may have been lost.
