4th gear crunch

I was quoted £2000+ from a gearbox specialist to repair mine, hence why I went down the dealer and Renault uk way. Karl quoted me £960+vat for a box without exchange

obviously a joke!!! they werent serious by that quote....

I've heard that it can be just as much to repair as to replace tbh.

Im kinda stuck really as i need my car for work so if it goes off the road i will need a courtesy car which is why i'm going down the dealer/ ruk route.

Mine seems to be worse when it gets warm,i know i'm clutching at straws here but would a slightly heavier oil help at all like a 75/90?

theres no crunch if i'm gentle with the gearchange into 4th so maybe the syncro is only slightly worn as opposed to sh***ed.

its worth a try to a better oil - try opie oils on here for a recommendation :thumbup1:

I've got 2 litres of fuchs sintofluid to go in to try recommened by opie but it's still 75/80 not sure if it's better than the oem Elf oil.Or to try a 75/90?

Thanks for your help fox

Might be worth having a chat with Agency Transmissions in Gloucester - they refurb the 1*2 boxes for about 250-300 quid.

Which is considerably cheaper than a new box from Renault!!

I have a spare box for sale with a worn synchro on third; might be easier to get that repaired to reduce the time your car is off the road?

They were serious parts alone 1200 + vat. The dealer drained the oil and it was full of swarf and they have had the car since Wednesday and no sign of getting it back either so not a quick process tbh

It's a shame that you can't buy a quaife kit or something similar

wouldnt go any "thicker" as you would not get gears from cold :rain:

:bat:

I paid a whole £550 to get mine fixed after the 3rd n 4th crunch

you can get good "quotes" :thumbup1:

Maybe in the uk, but here in the IOM your screwed its 300 just for the boat fare and I can get a new box with 6mths warranty for 600 delivered so if Renault don't put their hand in their pocket that's what I will do

Update

Cars been in with the dealer today needed a set of front pads for the mot so not bad at all really.

They also drained the gearbox and deep joy no swarf:thumbup1:

They seem to think maybe 4th syncro maybe gotten a bit lazy so have changed the oil that i supplied .Which will hopefully improve things. When the pads arrive tomorrow said they are going to take it out to see if anything needs to be adjusted on the linkage.

All in all a lot better than i expected.Phew.

Don't "phew" yet, your symptoms are very similar to mine and changing the 'box oil made no difference. No dwarf in mine either.

I got the call today to say RUK will go halves with me for the repair so, it's going to cost me £980 for a new box with 12 myths warranty

What does the crunch sound like? Is it a very audible crunch and does it happen all the time?

Any videos of the noise so those of us who haven't experienced it or maybe worried about it happening can have a listen.

I dont have a crunch but at high revs (near the limiter) I alwasy struggle from second going in to third, hope this isnt a sign....

It's a definite audible crunch, like you just started to learn to drive and aren't using the clutch, going up the box it's a bit different it's notchy and slightly noisey. Rest of the gears are perfect.

I've got the same problem just now but with third and fourth gear, out of warranty also, been on to RUK and they said bring it into a dealership and go from there stating they will always try to financially help when the customer has had previous Renaultsport cars or owned it for sometime with a Renault service, however I'm in spain with the car for a while and they said take it to a dealership over here and then they will sort out a reimbursement afterwards, not sure whether to believe that one or not!
