Xenon Auto level. On going.

A re-occuring post but never seem to see solution...

My lights started off being too high, but are now too low... which is better as I can drive at night without blinding people!

Previous threads that I searched seemed to dispute wether there were one or two sensors...

After a lot of searching, I have found one at the rear and one at the front of my 197... With help from a poor printoff from Renault Southend.

The rear is easy to find on the LHS, just infront of the rear wheel where the brake lines travel...

The front is more tricky but easy to spot when you know where... It is conected to the anti-roll bar, rather than the wish bone, which is why I couldn't find it.

Open the bonnet and look through the gap to the left hand side of the air filter... it is mounted to the top of the subframe to the rhs of the exhaust (when standing infront of the car).

Like I say, I have yet to diagnose the exact prob... sensors look ok, so not a broken linkage or displaced connector etc.

Renault Quoted £77+vat for rear & £110+vat for front sensor.... + £45 for diagnostic.

I'd be reluctant to start swapping sensors willy (and indeed) nilly before I knew what the fault was exactly.

I think the diagnostic session is worth the money, but trouble is, I'm sure Renault would say they are faulty regardless just to get the sale.

It might be worth seeking out a Renault specialist with the same diagnostic equipment...

it might be worth disconnecting each one at a time and moving it manually and see what effect it has - it just might help you find the faulty one

Beat me to it

You can un-clip the rod on the rear one quite easily and move the lever up and down, you should see the lights moving up and down if you face towards a wall with them switched on

Mine have started to do this now :worried:

I'm yet to get under the car and have a play around with them but if one of the sensors is faulty and I wiggle the other around, will the xenons go up and due to the system recognising a faulty sensor??

Both the sensors look intact.

Did you manage to fix your xenons??

Cheers Woody

Did you find the fault yourself or did you just book it into the steelers?

It's just so annoying, paying for someone else to fix it when you just have to unclip the old one and clip in a new one :@

the stealer are the only place that can get the part mate. imported from france :worried:

I took it in and told them what it was as it had happened before :worried:

Sorry about locked photos...

I ended up going to the dealers... was the rear sensor...

Cost me less than getting it diagnosed & fixing myself.

Lookers, Chelmsford... Not all dealers are Stealers!

sorry for the bump but how can you tell if they arent working correctly. mine always seem to be at the same level. the only time I've seen the three levels is when I turn the lights on myself via the stalk and it goes through them.

Because fella, they either point to the sky and every on coming driver flashes you, or like mine, they go into fail safe mode and light up about 2foot in front of the car, so you can't see anything
