Two new lower ball joints

Hi guys,

Car just came back from it's service and I had two warnings about the front ball joints, both of them. They gave me a price of £1200 to replace them both! Are you actually serious? What's that like 15% of the value of the car, for a joint?

Anyway @dajones says these are what I need http://www.k-tecracing.com/show_product.asp?id=5204&catid=&appid=0&pic=2

Anyone know how to fit these? Do you need special machinery? Are they the correct ones? It's not an emergency, but he says that they're both on their way out.

If no luck, could Renault UK help? The car has literally just hit 18k.

For anyone interested (Don't worry about the tyres, was already aware): http://video.citnow.com/vtV8Nkgzs1t

I literally got the same thing yesterday but i only need one ( should really do both ) and im £497, got that down from £589 aswell, its rubbish.
wish i could order that part and get someone to do it, but cant really be bothered, the creaking pisses me off that mich i just want it done.

Mine aren't even creaking! I didn't even realise there was wear and tear down there until he mentioned it in the video, thought everything was sound apart from the tyres which I was well aware of putting it in.

You can get them for £60 each from r sport in Wimbledon. There is no way fitting 2 of them is near £1000 though, sounds like someone is trying to rip you off. Apparently they can be removed and replaced by heating the hub up and pressing them in/out. Or they can be hydrolically done, I thinks that's how mine were done.

Its a ridiculous design that they cant be done cheaper, i mean they class this as wear and tear at £500 a go, i would expect a ferrari to be sitting at that sort of price for a small item like this!

a bit confused tbh with these as there are lower and upper ball joints if im not mistaken-easily can be as im not a mechanic..but as mentioned above, you can get them from Renaul wimbledon for about £60 each...had a couple as a spare but sold them as mine are still good...
pretty sure you dont have to buy the whole hub though..

Know anyone reputable close to the UK? dajones has mentioned one in Swansea but I'd like a few options to see who can do it and who can't. I'm not paying £1200.

Yeah loads of posts about these. Pretty much to go to renault you have to buy the whole hub, hence the huge bill. You can buy the ball joints themselves and then a specialist will heat up the unit and drop them in, hence why you need someone who knows what they are doing. Bloke in Derbyshire who does them.

i would be arguing that to renault though, 18k miles and they are done already is pretty crap.

Your biggest issue right now will be getting hold of the parts
I'm still waiting for anyone in Britain to stock any!!

Fairly sure they press out and new ones press in. Give ktec a bell. The guy on the phone knows whats going on with the hubs

From what I was told it was to do with Renault not selling just the joint, hence having to buy a new hub and being charged £500 a side, depending on the garage they may do just the joint and not the hub.
i know when/if mine go I will only be doing the joint.
Anyway you have 12 months to get it fixed

As much as I hate KTEC's maps. They do a decent service, some bad but a lot good. Will have to pay them a visit. I have a friend here who says he can do it as he has a press machine so maybe I won't even need to travel to Verwood again.

If your referring to the lower ball joint / hub pivot then I replaced mine, wasn't as difficult as I had thought it would be. Although luckily my old one didn't require much force to remove from the hub, was able to tap it out.

As Paul has said above, I would recommend Aarons Autos in Derby. Really nice guys and they did a great job at changing the lower ball joint on my 197 just a few weeks back. They charge £175 a side, so much cheaper than what Renault want off you.

Hope this helps

Yep, that's a website advertising a product
ring them up and see if they've actually got them?

Theyre currently on back order from France for 10-14 days....
