This may be b******t but....

Just heard that the max speed for winter tyres on uk roads is 50mph, I'm pretty sure this is bs but just Thot I'd throw it out there, I know that snow socks and chains have limits usually set by the manufacturer but not aware of any legal reason behind it (Apart from the obvious failures of driving with chains on Tarmac)

Any tyre fitters/mechanics that could shed some light on this?
 
I doubt an actually tyre is that low a rating, seen as speed limits are 70 on motorways.

I can see chains etc being that, not tyres though. But I'm open to being good different.
 
Well the rating on my current winters is H which iirc is 131mph so can easily handle 60-70 and tbf in snow who's doing that!!
 
There's no legal limit specifically governing how fast you can drive on winter tyres in the UK, just the usual speed limits.

Winter tyres don't tend to have the very high speed ratings, and the fastest I've seen them rated to and tested to is 150mph.
