Stone broke a hole in radiator - wire mesh barrier the solution?

So last week I opened the garage door to find a puddle of coolant on the floor. Hmmm...

Local garage (gatechangegarage.co.uk in Tenbury Wells, Worcestershire who are bloody brilliant if you are in the area) diagnosed it as a leak from the radiator. They found a stone wedged in the radiator and the coolant was leaking from cracks caused by the stone. They replaced the radiator and it's all fine now.

Questions:

• has this or anything simimlar happened to anyone else?
• would it be possible to fit some kind of DIY wire mesh barrier to prevent this from happening again?

This sort of thing is very uncommon, I would just leave it as is. Most modern cars have fairly open grills yet it is very rare you hear of a radiator going because of a stone, I think you have just been unlucky

More common to get holes in the ac condenser. If yours is a cup it probably doesn't have ac...
