Steering Rack

After reading more and more about faulty steering racks im starting to think mine is on the way out. Ive just read that if you hear a clunk when going from lock to opposite lock then it needs replacing. Well guess what lol...........

Is this something that would be checked on an MOT as my mate did it last week but didnt say anything?

Cheers Lads.

PS - I do have warranty until end of Feb

I actually noticed it when parrallel parking the other night so had limited room so was turning from lock to lock quickly.

They check for play in the steering components at the MOT but most cars have their little noises and quirks so they probably wouldn't think twice about it unless they were a Renault specialist and knew about the odd person having issues with the rack...

Most cars will groan or clunk from the steering if you're stationary and going lock to lock.

When I'm on full lock (full lock minus 5 degrees) and turning right, mine makes a kind of beating sound. It's always made this noise but recently I think it's making it louder.

mot test IF done right will show up most faults and any wear...this then should be an "advisory" if its not too excessive!

as for steering knocks and clunks - is this with the engine running so the eps is on?

steering will have a slight knock clunk when stationary and no assistance - if it does it when on full lock then its usually due to hitting the rack stops...

the steering assitance motor will also have a sort of slight play so it can switch direction for assistance

you can also pick up knocks and clunks from other not so worn parts like top mounts and ball joints etc

theres a few things seem to be getting a "scare-factor" on here steering racks and gearboxes and it seems to cause a bit of paranoia :tongueout:anic:
