Sprint spoiler problems

Hi Chaps, this is very unfortunate, Steve is a proper gent.

However i wish to stress the K-Tec sprint spoilers are of excellent quality, specialising in custom parts and aftermarkets we get to see a few here and there, and some after market spoilers are utterly terrible. We've probably done 7 or 8 sprints and the shape has always been consistent and although the quality of priming, damage (scuffing) in transit etc has varied per spoiler we always heavily sand and reprime / refinish so it isnt the end of the world.

The construction of these K-Tec spoilers is nothing any different to genuine renault spoiler parts, but in my experience generally they are FAR better than your average Renault 197/200 Cup spoiler (no im not on the k-tec payrol lol),however from time to time, they all come either with pin hole's, poor filling, and other minor defects. For instance, we have done atleast 10 172/182 spoilers, genuine renault spoilers and you wouldnt believe how crap they are, the variation is incredible.

As with ANY plastic part, ovening has be done carefully or not at all, ovening is NOT a requirement to curing modern day professional paints. The type of plastic is normally labled on the spoilers / parts so a decision can be made as to the max temperature (which should never exceed 60c). If the parts flexible and plastic it will bend under heat if its not supported. I mean lets say i took a genuine renault plastic wing, hung it on a stand by 1 hole and allowed it twist under its own weight and ovened it, the outcome will be the same (something like that is alot more flexible and will recover easier).

When you take a part to a body shop, you take it there for there painting expertise, if they take the job on you wouldnt expect to have to give them instructions on how to paint it and what to do and not to do, thats what your paying them for.

I think what steves offered is excellent, and very generous, his cars are always superb, but on this instance i think the responsiblity is with the body shop to either put it right, refund for the spray work and potentially provide a new spoiler if its bend out of shape beyond recovery. Its the risk you take as a body shop when you take a job on.......

Im convinced from the pictures with applied heat (possibly IR instead of oven heat as its more focused) it can be bought back into shape, but really you'll need to have one which is good to compare against.

Unfortunately too many body shops are "rush rush" shops, ovening everything and getting the next one in asap, people want things done in a day more and more and it just isnt possible on all items.

Cheers,
Si

Cheers- I think it will be difficult to obtain some sort of refund from the bodyshop as from one expert to another they will obviously state an opinion that will be against Spray shack ( to protect themselves )

I think it would be best if James gets it over & SS get it back in shape with the IR treatment-

Good right up sprayshack. No steve did the very best when buying my 200 and made buying it very easy.
I will get on the case today of both parties and let u know

I have to say i'm with SS on this. If a business takes the work on then they are liable end of. If you're worried about doing the job then refuse it. It's no different to say when I took my FRS to Ford for a service, they punchered one of the tyres and they replaced it. That's business.

Hope you get it sorted in the end mate, and at minimal extra expense.

Also bravo to Steve, 99.9% of people would never have offered that in your position. But then you really shouldn't have had to in the first place.

Hi Chaps, well as some of you may know we agreed to look at this for james to see if it could be recovered,as he got no where with the body shop who sprayed it. Firstly the paint finish was VERY poor, virtually no lacquer on the lip heavy orange peal on the lip aswell, no makers mark filling, massive chip on the end which had been sprayed over, not great.......

Anyway ive managed to get the shape much much better, with some careful applied IR heat, and some careful clamping and water application lol. It has damaged the paint as you would expect, but nothing that cannot be fixed.

Heres the current shape (i think its pretty close, it wont ever be absolutely spot on)........ideally what i need now is a spoiler less 197/200 to come to us, whos prepared for me to try the fit. So i dont know if anyones local to HR6 0RJ?

(BTW its just water on the spoiler, its just been cooled down)

Once i can try it on a car, i can bend it more or reduce the bend.....but if i dont have a doner vehicle or undamaged sprint spoiler (ktec are out of stock) im a bit stuck now.

Cheers,
Simon @ SS

just need another nice person to pop down so simon can see it fits

Yep definately, will need a respray unfortunately mate, few cracks in the paint as its returned to shape, which i will sand out and do a proper job spraying it for you, getting rid of the pants makers mark & defects.

Ill hold off doing any more till i can try it on someones car

So they didn't even get rid of the makers mark? That mark is big and in the middle of the spoiler, its a must do thing to do when painting a sprint spoiler. The original job is getting worse and worse in my book. Looks like a cracking job at repairing it so far though.

Looks good.

Just shows the difference when someone paints something
Whos is really proud of what they do. Also a specialist in these bolt on parts.
