R26 engine conversion

what’s the ball park figure to do a r26 , inc gearbox engine conversion? And where would you go for a drive in drive out conversion ?

I can’t help you with the question but a word of advice from what I’ve seen in the past. It would be sensible to buy a whole Megane and run it as a daily for a while to make sure the engine is all ok. I’ve seen a few people buy just an engine to fit and run into endless, costly engine problems once they had the unknown engine fitted.

Sound advice from Peter, do it once, do it right.

£4495 drive in drive out at Beaniesport in MK. R26 engine and box. If i was to offer any advice I’d say have the engine rebuilt with forged pistons and rods before the conversion. If you want a go in one I’m based in Herts and would be only to happy to help.

That include the engine and gearbox ?

That’s very kind of you to offer

I’m only just thinking about it ..... maybe in a little while .

With my car only covering such low miles I’d also want a very low mileage engine / box in .

Would be great to build a super mint , low mileage Clio / r26 car . But I’m a perfectionist , so it would need to be done 100% perfect .

Another bit of advice, you might as well buy one already done than drop 5k on yours. They come up quite a lot from anything from 3-10k.
If you track it you will blow it up eventually.

IMO you dont need more that 270bhp out of these, if you want more power go for something mid engined RWD.

Problem is my car must be up there with one of the very best Clio R.S. mk3’s .... so I know it’s a good car . All the ones I’ve seen for sale have basically been dogs .

Already have a mid engined /rwd car :thumb:

Also I would only do 2 -3 track days a year . I’m not a track fanatic .... as much as I’d like to be !

I think if you were going to do it, definitely get a 250 engine rather than a 225. As said above there's plenty of people who have done it and had major problems and then had to get them forged etc.

Some people obviously have had no issues but there's no guarantee the engine you're getting is going to be any good as you just don't know!

Especially as like you say wanting low mileage, it'd be far easier to find a low mileage MK3 engine as opposed to a MK2 engine.

Find an example that’s been built professionally and I’d agree there’s some meglios that are very well priced for sale.

I’ve no idea what you mean by if you track it you’ll blow it up eventually!?
I’ve had no such issues and I know others that haven’t as well. Perhaps you’ve had a bad experience?

Also find 300/310 a perfect number power wise. Diff can still cope and get the power down and the extra straight line speed gets you past some very capable cars!

Just my observations.

My turbo failed as I think the map was slightly too strong for it. I had a spare engine to go in and will see how this one goes. The turbo failed and compression was down so all that oil didn't do it any good.

I heard over the years of these engines failing and of course taking them past 300 can cause problems.

You are probably right on the power level, I'm not running a diff so I think 270-280 is enough.

The meg engine does make the car.

.... as said it’s not something I’m going to jump into doing straight away ... only done 300 miles in the car so far ! But if I decide to keep it a while then I can see myself going down this route .

Saying that ...... I have had a chat with BeanieSport already . Very friendly and knowledgeable having completed 20 conversions so far . I think from our chat I’d be going sub 30k 250 engine / box . I’ll have a good think and maybe make a plan of action .

I love mine, but definitely go low mileage 250 or forged route, with the R26 box. Mine's Running 304bhp/298lb/ft and it copes really well with it, can be mapped for a little more once I have all my niggles sorted!
