Hi Guys,

Unfortunately my cars coming up to 5 years old so its belts and water pump time. I live Spalding Lincolnshire and looking for anyone that may have any information a specialists around the area. I don't mind travailing a bit to get the job done right?

The other option is the buy the timing tools and do it myself, has anyone attempted this themselves? I've done a few cam belts before, but I just keep hearing how hard the 197 belt is to do right so I'm a little apprehensive about it?

Cheers Luke

I'd do it yourself if you've got the experience mechanically and the time/tools. As long as you've got the locking tools you'll be fine, as long as you don't mind potentially loosing a bit of money in doing so.

only thing with these cars, people make a big deal out of having the belts done and a receipt to prove they've been done, and done by a reputable garage. due to the common failure of them and expensive costs in repairing.

so due to the value of a 197 still, I'd have the belt done by a specialist, there's a few deal on now and again, think there was one for £499 the other day. Can't remember which specialist.

Simons at Heckington are pretty good. I've had a few dealings with them and never had a problem. I'm sure he quoted me 450 when I enquired about timing belt. Mines not due yet but I think I will be using them.

I did mine earlier this year, same as you I'd done timing belts before etc. I bought the tools, then sold them on straight after and only lost £10 so basically rented them for a few days for a tenner!

All in I think it cost me £250(ish) for parts (Belt & tensioner, waterpump, aux belt & tensioner) and a new torque wrench. All the parts were genuine Renault, from Steve @ R-Sport.

The technical guide is extremely good, i'm sure there's a link on here somewhere for it.

if you are doing it yourself, just take a few pictures and keep your reciepts showing the parts you used.

Cheers for the info guys, id already pretty much decided to do it myself, this just confirms it. Chris did you buy the tools from Renault or 3rd party ones?

The car needs an MOT at the same time, so today id thought id ring up my local Renault dealer to get a price for it all (just for the shear laugh), but it turns out Renault have changed the service schedule from 5 to 6 years according to their system. I explained about the Clio 200 being different but he assured me my 197 was changed as well, so there we go. Il most likely still change it any way just to be sure. Oh and around £800 for a belt change from them.
