Mk3 Rear Lights / Earth

I have a friend with a Megane 225 with a earth issue to the N/S/R lights - The problem was spotted when he would have his sidelights on and then use the indicator, the sidelight (and brake lights if the brakes were on) would dim a fair amount...

We ended up testing whether it was earth related by running a bit of scrap cable directly to the metal on the bulb holder itself (bypassing the plug entirely) directly to the negative terminal on the battery and it fixed the issue.

I de-pinned the plug and could see the earth pin had melted some plastic around the plug causing a bad connection. Cleaned it up and bent the plug pin so it made a solid contact to the pin on the bulb holder and issue was resolved.

Difficult to explain, but on the picture below is where we used the cable on the megane 225 bulb holder directly to negative terminal to test... Try this - if it works then it's 100% earth related and you can find a solution from there. I have read some people just solder a earth directly to the bulb holder metal and use the boot earth point but we didn't have to go down that route as depinning and cleaning up the plug worked!

Pic: Central pin was the earth - so follow the metal casing all around and any part of that should be fine to test with:
