Looking for a shed...

I'm moving off shift from this Monday and that means that I'll be commuting to work (20 miles round trip) on an everyday basis. I'm not happy to do this in my clio as it get really frustrating trying to avoid all those potholes and I also don't want to clock up the mileage with in town driving. So...I'm looking for an everyday runner, budget is £1k max. What should I get? Any ideas??

106 diesel 1.5 non turbo. Cheap, basic, slow as hell and crazy good on fuel.

I'm thinking of doing the same Yiannis. Could look at Clio 2's for a grand you will get a average condition one on around 80k. Also the Corsa C (the plague as I call them) go for dirt cheap. If you lucky you might find an 02 plate 1.2 seat Ibiza which I actually think are quite nice looking.

Since the commute is not going to be crazy miles I'm not too fussed to go for a diesel but that 106 is quality. I was looking at this box earlier, 1.0L auto and only 15 miles away from where I live.
