How to request - remove gear gaiter

I understand that the gear knob comes off by pulling upwards but how does the gear gaiter come off? I've got a leather one and don't want to snap any clips taking the old one out

You remove the black trim at the bottom, it clips out, then you have to pull a load of staples out of the silver insert unfortunately.
