Gearbox syncro rings

Last season I was developing a crunch going into 3rd on the track car so over winter I have stripped the box and now I have the shafts in front of me, to me the syncro rings on 3rd and 4th look a little chewed (no surprise there)

Now I thought to solve this issue all I needed to do was replace the rings? However the dealer I've talked to seems to think the whole syncro unit needs to be replaced?

Any guidance on this issue?

Also is there an upgraded syncro ring availible? Renault the in place to buy?

Thanks
Sam

Sorry to hear of your troubles... Was this a main dealer you talked to or a gearbox specialist ? The latter would be my start point to be honest.

Its also amazing how little wear causes issues judging by your pictures.

(Not suggesting you havn't for one moment) - but these pics are perhaps an extremely good reason to do frequent oil changes !

This was main dealer, I've got a transmission place close to me so I may take the input shaft to them.

The wear never stopped me getting gears but the crunch was there and only going to get worse, I've had the car for coming upto 2 years and always run on motul fluids.

3rd is the worse and I can see a bit of a step cut out of the baulk ring teeth.

Can't vouch for how the box was looked after before however I believe I have a receipt showing the box was rebuilt and 1st/2nd rings replaced which are both ok now

@samben if you look at the synchro components, you'll see that the edges have become rounded, whereas they should come to a point. It's false economy not to replace the entire synchro when you're this far in.

From what I've been told, Renault have changed the design of the synchro rings in the TL4 box from brass to steel.

Do you mean the teeth on the outer selector ring?

I have only just noticed that, the more I look the more worn bits I see! [emoji53]

Bugger... full refresh may be in order then.

Most the other gears have to come off to get to 3rd gear anyway...

3rd and 4th are the 2 that give 90% of issues so would be a false economy not to do both of these for new Imo. and yeah new ones from Renault are steel now.

Hmmm, my gearbox has started crunching in 3rd!!!
Looks like I'll have this job on my hands soon!
It only seems to do it when your giving it hell, going from 2nd to 3rd (doesn't when you pause between gears) always does it going from 4th to 3rd
Drive calmly and it fine.
Does anybody know roughly the cost involved for parts required?

Rubbish news of the highest order Nick.

Not sure about parts alone: but a few guys on here have had their box's refurbed recently and prices have varied from around £600 upto £900 depending on exactly what was replaced and where in the Country they were.

Also of course depends on if your taking the box out yourself or looking for a drive-in / drive-out service.

Not the cheapest exercise ever unfortunately.

Maybe someone will know of a reputable gearbox specialist in your area.......

I'll be doing all the work myself
I've never ever used a garage for repairs or any work.
It's just getting the parts. I'll give my local Renault dealer a call in the morning. They have been very good so far.
It's just getting annoying as it is one thing after another...
Started with swivel joints, then seized driveshaft hub assembly, anti twist links, snapped bleed nipples on brakes, dodgy headlight wiring causing intermittent indicator failure.
Its never ending!

One good thing though... perfect time to fit an LSD!!!!

Surely Renault should have recognised a fault with their gearboxes, I mean they are so unreliable. My dads FF 200 has a crunchy 4th and it has only done 40k... that is a poor poor do really!

It's sat on my desk as a reminder to take mine apart.
The Part is not expensive.
Part Number 3rd Gear Syncro: 8200 641 529 - £22.20+VAT

Haha... fair play. Yeah I probably won't get round to doing mine for a while. I take it they last for ages crunching? And don't completely fail?

That's a good price!! Will ring Renault today, cheers!
