Villeneuve vs Arnoux Dijon '79 is a great example - bumping into each other but all good racing. Imagine these whinging c#nts now racing like that.

Crazy, and sad bit of F1 history. Mad story. Shows the limits they were at back then. Drivers these days live in very different times.

my dad and i went to that dijon race back in '79. sadly we were standing near the start/finish straight, so never saw the infield battle and only got to know of that tremendous battle when we got home and saw the tv footage. we did see those two driving really really close at insane speeds down that straight, though. wasn't that also the first renault (turbo) F1 victory (jabouille)?

and i was also there when villeneuve died in '82. was at zolder. just ten minutes from where we lived. i have a slide somewhere of villeneuve minutes before he went back out to try to beat pironi's time (was qualifying and i was standing on the pit grandstand, so had a good view of the ferrari pit). he already had a go, so he was on worn tyres and the mechanics tried to cool them down by pouring water over them (with a watering jug you'd use in the garden!). out he went and minutes later i heard the speaker shout his name and first i thought he actually did get pole (though i missed him coming past the main straight), but quickly found out he had a big one. the place went quiet. was on my birthday, 8th of may (16 then).

Well done for pulling this round to being Renault related too! It was indeed the first Renault Turbo victory for JPJ.

Giles was my guy growing up, I even named a pet after him. Was absolutely devastated when he had his accident.

gilles was god, mes. jarama in '81 mentioned above and that monaco win the same year in what surely is the ugliest and worst handling ferrari F1 ever. saw him that same year throwing the thing into the armco at the 'bosch kurve' in austria too. '82 should have been his year really. oh, and the way he put that awful T5 of '80 in places it didn't belong to be. never gave up that season, unlike his teammate. still find it a shame he had to play second fiddle to scheckter in 1979. a bit like peterson to andretti in 1978. shows you what characters both were.

i need to find those slides and try to scan them. job for the weekend.

The rumour is that Ricciardo has signed an option with Ferrari, meaning that between now and June 30th Ricciardo and Ferrari can only talk to each other regarding the Ferrari seat for 2019. Ferrari are understood to have paid Ricciardo a fee to stop him negotiating with other teams until then. Not sure if that includes Red Bull though.
I'm sure Shitebag McGerman will be happy, given that Ricciardo spanked his arse in 2014....

@Sean197 I hope that's true about DR. That would be VERY interesting to see. However, I'd honestly be surprised. It would be the first time in many many years (since Didier and Giles?) that Ferrari have had two top drivers of equal status in the team. I hope it's true, would be very interesting (and possibly hilarious) to see how Seb deals with it. My guess is it wouldn't be quite the same as it was at RB. Something wasn't right with Seb at that point, maybe he already knew about the Ferrari drive.

Also, VERY interesting article about the extra paddle. Funny how it's only Seb who has it yet Kimi still seems to be the quicker of the two this season, "not bad for a number two driver..."

@///M I also think DR would drive more conservatively at Ferrari - it's all very well pulling banzai overtaking moves every race, but when you're in a title race and every point counts you have to be more pragmatic. I'm not sure DR could do that, he seems to be a bit of a one-trick pony in all honesty.

Totally agree Sean. Will be a very different situation at Ferrari. Honestly, I'm not sure he has the bottle to be a champion, I guess we will see. But even before that, it would only take a couple of guys to block him properly when he's doing one of his do or die moves and it would make him think a lot more.

I agree with all three of you above, but let’s remember.... ITS FERRARI!

When I was younger, we all played football to quite a decent level. A few mates went onto Crewe and Wrexham. But two mates got offers from Liverpool and Man City, as well as the standard Crewe and Wrexham, that a lot of people get around here.
They got drawn by the big offers, even though the chances of making it were ALOT smaller.
Suffice to say that none of us ever made the big time, but the draw to the big names was there. Even taking into account the risk and obvious drawbacks, it was a no brainer!

The name Ferrari means a lot to any car person, and to say you’ve driven in F1 for Ferrari. Surely that’s the stuff every grandad dreams of.

Peter, EXACTLY. You know what's coming, send him down the outside. But I tell you why no one hasn't? Because if anyone got rear ended by a DR banzai sling it in and hope for the best move their team boss would be all over them for not bringing home the points because their shareholders / sponsors / or whatever don't give a stuff about sport and only care about the numbers. The balls, bravery, sheer bloody mindedness and maybe a good bit of plain being nuts is being systematically being removed from the sport.

There was in interview with Ted Kravitz recently and he was asking him if he was in the same position as Bottas on the last lap up against Seb. DR said he'd have slung one up the inside. And you could tell the way he's saying it he knows he's just winging it and hoping for the best. Genuinely surprised he's not come unstuck yet. But given what I just said above, maybe he won't and he's playing on it.

He wouldn't get away with it with Senna for instance. He'd get blocked and crash until he learned. Although I think Max might sort him out too.

I would LOVE to see Lewis and DR in the same team, don't care which! But the best thing that could happen for me is for DR to go to Merc and Lewis to go to Ferrari so we could have a proper head to head with Seb. Dreaming I know but how good would it be?
