Drag Racing a 200

In March weather permitting I'll be running the car up the strip..

Anyone spent any time finding best combination of tyre pressures f & r? also did you run with the traction control off -to stop it bogging?

I'm intending to take the seats out when I run..

Any thoughts/advice would be kindly received

Andy

It depends on the surface tbh.

I ran my old car up the strip and in the morning I ran with traction as it was slippy but later on in the day it got sticky and quite tacky.

Great fun.

you doing it for fun or to set a new 1/4 mile time?

if its for fun, just run normal pressures, dont waste your time or effort removing seats, and see the real performance of the car.

If its to break some records, some drag slicks, a turbo and a shot of nos will help!

will help to blow up the engine lol

Just want to see what I can get out of the car more or less standard, i know on my friends gti-6 we eventually got it to 14.5, with a full exhaust system and by removing the seats and playing around with the tyre pressures..

It will be @ santa pod

Ben_R1 has done a fair amount of drag racing (he does use NOS afaik) he'd be the best bet for tips

You need to adjust the pressures accordingly to how well your getting traction off the launch, but I'd just start with normal pressures and obviously don't bother touching the rears.

There is an advantage to running with the traction control off but IMO it's very useful for getting decent launches everytime where as with no TC you will get one amazing launch for every 5 messed up. Try keeping it on half throttle all the way through 1st and floor in second gear, once you get the launch perfected then the rest is pretty easy. Although it is very easy to miss 3rd in the clios gearbox when lightning shifting :tongueout:

try both lanes of the strip throughout the day, especially on makeshift strips like airfields etc. as one will inevitably offer more grip than the other.

Unless you want to be changing clutches every few months resist the temptation to burn out at the start to clean/warm your tyres. On road tyres it's pointless and expensive. With this is mind steer round the water puddle most strips put at the staging area entrance to aid burnout. This will obviously keep your tyres dry.

And run literally less than quatre of a tank to help with weight, a day at the strip will use almost no petrol as it involves 14 seconds of racin then an hour of queuing up ( push your car down the queue ).

I managed 13:40 as my best but as said I run nitrous down the strip. My best natural run is 14:80 but my local airfield strip seriously lacks the grip of Santa pod etc.

I ran into problems with running on a old used lane with TC off. But nothing compared to my mate with his 197, he near enough blew his engine and gearbox with traction control off and this guy is a serious racer doing trackdays and karting every weekend basically..

So kinda just gotta watch, he done that with normal inflation on wheels TC off but lack of grip at half throttle.

What??

I've always found less traction to be less strenuous on a cars drivetrain. Spend a day a Santa pods sticky staging area and you can feel the clutch giving up after every run as the wheels refuse to spin sending all that strain down the gearbox.

Slippery lanes that offer alot of wheelspin lose all their strain through the tyres.
