Door handle buttons

Wasn't sure where this should go so I'm trying here.

I have a Megane 275 and my mum has a Captur. The keyless entry works by pressing a little rubber button on the door handle to unlock and walk away and it locks.

I now also have a 197. There are like little hard plastic buttons on the door handle. But to unlock I don't have to press them, I just have to grab the handle. Or press the button to open the boot. There is also a button in the middle of the diamond on the boot. When I press this the car locks. When I press the button on the door handles, nothing happens. What are the buttons for? When I walk away the car also doesn't lock. I have to use the button on the keycard.

The unlock is done on the doors by infrared proximity sensor as your hand goes over the handle its the little dark square plate behind the handle to un lock the boot is to push the lower boot open button in both cases the key card must be detected. To lock the car any of the handle or diamond push buttons can be pressed again the key card needs to be detected. The exceptions can be opening the drivers door after I think 36 hours the proximity sensor deactivates but rearms when the door handle is pulled first time. The Renault diagnostic clip ( The dealer unit) can show if the key card is in range and if the proximity sensor has activated and or when the button is press along with all dash buttons for troubleshooting. As for walking away and self-locking well that's what happens after 8 years between models things improve but I think if the push button locks the unlocks the doors but are not opened after a little time the car locks again but that bit I'm not 100% on. Having fresh batteries and the key card and in the pocket closest to the door helps and there is a feature not sure about that if the spare key is inside the car when the main key locks it the key card inside the car gets deactivated for proximity until the button on the spare is used to lock the car or something like that.

Hope this was what your looking for

Thanks for all the information! There must be something wrong with the buttons on my doors. Ill have a look again today!

Yea that can happen the handles are about £50 - £60 the button mechanism is gel filled there is a how to door handle removal section, there is a tool for removing Mégane door handles without taking the door inside panel off not sure if it works on Clio’s but the handles are nearly but not the same. The keycard detector and button are in the handle so if changed should fix it the keycard could be the problem but everything can be tested using the Renault clip or the keycard on the other doors before shelling out money on parts. The old door handle shell could be sold as some people like to paint them if your handle still has a good finish there is an unpainted version might be cheaper and swap the internals same handle does both sides.
