CLIP Airbag Decoding Help Please

Over the past 6 months I’ve converted my 197 into a track day toy but trying to keep it road legal (so I can drive to track) and need to code out the curtain/seat airbag lights on the dash to pass MOT due at the end of January.

Is there anyone in the Basingstoke or surrounding areas that has CLIP and would be interested in helping me out?

Thanks
Rich.

If you can't get CLiP just fit some resistors for the MOT, do a search for size, 2 ohms iirc...

Thanks that would certainly be a quick fix for the MOT if I can’t find someone with CLIP.

The air bags can be turned on and off the different airbags have different resistances the clip shows the current readings as well as the lower and upper limits I think the seat rail is 100ohms and the dash airbags are between 1.8 - 4.0 ohms but don't take this as fact. Best thing would be to program them out. Dealers will not turn them off not allowed to, but a specialist will if they see what's done the big problem around all this is someone could take all the airbags out of the car or not fix them disable the system and you don't find out as the buyer of the car until an accident happens and the airbags don't deploy, airbags alone can get a car written off.

Update: Managed to pick up CLIP from eBay yesterday and have coded the errors out, was fairly straight forward once I’d got the software installed on a really old laptop!

Error lights no longer showing on dash...problem solved

I have access to a friends ebay special, but do you have a link to the one you purchased? At least I know it'll work!

The clip I bought the setup cd was full of viruses so give the laptop check after install or use an old laptop that is not used for personal stuff. I went and downloaded a new clean version from the net for mine but the clip is a useful tool it has a better insight than just error codes.

It was a second hand one about half an hour from where I live so could collect. The others I looked at all had a long delivery time as they are coming from Hong Kong. The one I bought is definitely a Chinese copy though because some of the wording in the install text file wasn’t proper English lol. The guy said he had used it and it worked so less of a gamble if you can find a used one.

Yeah so true, always worth doing a virus scan of files before installing, luckily no problems with it but using a really old laptop that’s not used for anything else.

I’m using version 178...think the latest is 191 but not really sure if there are any benefits of upgrading. Seemed to do everything I needed it for

Hi there, sorry to dig up an old thread but i’ve recently been stripping my clip 197 out too i’ve took everything out the back and also the curtain airbags. I have an airbag light on the dash, i’ve tried a 2.2ohm resistor however that didn’t seem to work so now i’m wondering what is this CLIP thing that is used to decode the airbag light and how can i get hold of one?

CLIP is a Renault tool. You plug one end in to the OBD port, the other end in to a laptop. Genuine CLIP devices are very expensive. Chinese copies from eBay will set you back about £100, or more. The Chinese copies are hit and miss but most should be able to turn off an airbag light. Alternatively if someone has CLIP local toy they might be able to help?

Buy the RS Tuner kit (includes a free custom remap). I have one and out of the £1000's spent on my 197, this one tool has been the most impressive bang for buck....

It allows you to read all specific faults and errors, view all live sensors/data and record this data when driving etc... Ability to download/backup and upload ECU mapping and calibration files. There are also separate modules that you can purchase (which I have done) that open access to:

Airbag Module support - Allows you to view what airbags are detected and whether they are enabled (if you remove an airbag, you will get a light, plug this in and you can disable that specific airbag and clear the airbag light fault)

Electronic Power Steering Config Module - Allows you to read and clear any steering related fault codes AND choose the power steering assistance you desire (ranging from weak to strong via the RS Tuner software)

ABS Module - Ability to read and clear ABS faults AND gives access to enable the pump to assist with bleeding the brakes (SUPER handy)...

Once you have purchased the modules as above, they are permanently unlocked on the hardware, meaning you can use it on ANY Clio 197/200. If you want to get a customised map/calibration for a mate, they need to buy the unlock code (reprog license) for their ECU and then purchase the stage 1 map/custom calibration totalling 118 Euro (roughly £100)...

Yes, they are based in NL but the chap (Henk) who I have dealt with has been fantastic. He went the extra mile by helping me diagnose cooling issue and faulty coil packs when in reality, he didn't have to help at all...

Response times are usually next working day (most of the time I've had a response in less than 24 hrs). Since my custom map back in 2019, I have had 0 cold start/kangarooing issues, hugely improved flat-spot (almost non-existent) and the car pulls very smoothly throughout the entire rev range. Before the map, I had terrible kangarooing, the flat spot was so bad it would make the exhaust pop/bang (and not move anywhere) if I put too much throttle on and I had different areas of the rev range where it would pull a bit harder than other areas (difficult one to explain, but it's almost like it had a vtec from like 5-6k revs then it stops...). Turns out the map that was on my car was really REALLY bad (I didn't ask for specifics but I think the timing was advanced so much it was a surprise the engine was able to cope?).

Not sure how many other people have these but just have a nose through the site and give it a shot. Anybody that's local to South West (Bristol) are welcome to have a look at how it works and can plug it into their Clio also.

Hope this was helpful for someone, at least!
