Clio 197 ball joints

Just wondering if anyone can help ??

Need 2 new ball joints for the wifes clio. Just had a quote back off local garage for £1200 for the job. Parts I've been told I will need are Hub unit / ball joint, wheel bearings and ball joint/ hub fitting kit.

Just wondering if there is an easier option to this as Im slightly surprised at the cost. I had been told prior to taking the car in that the job isn't a straight forward one as you cant just buy the ball joints but again surprised so now thinking Renault specialists might be a better option.

Any advice or help would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Chris, welcome to the forum.

The garage are right in saying that it is a tricky job to replace the ball joints, however that price is extortionate to say the least! The ball joint itself is available as a part, without having to buy the full unit, that most garages/dealers will insist on.

An RS specialist will be your best bet, as it will not only be cheaper than your quote, but they will know exactly what to do as well. Where are you based?

Hi Jimmy,

Thanks for the response.

I'm located in County Durham. I have found a Clio sport specialist in Durham so will give them a ring as Im hoping they might have a more realistic and cheaper solution.

Let us know how you get on, and if you need any other help. It is a common problem on these cars unfortunately, but thankfully there's a lot of knowledge about it as a result!

FYI I paid £120 for one side doing, fully inclusive. That was at Bolsover Car Care in Chesterfield - bit of a trek for you from the NE, but worth knowing if you are getting quoted silly numbers.

Clioturbo.co.uk should be able to help you out hes a nightmare to get hold of tho but always answers emails and is a really nice lad
