Can anyone help me with cup springs for 197?

My car went to local garage for a service Tuesday and it's still stuck there as they are getting trouble with getting the right part to fit is there any other springs I could replace the cup front springs with ? They have another part arriving today but again won't know if it fits till it arrives so they have also ordered a genuine part which isn't going to arrive till late tomorow ! I would of preferred the original part but if the other one fits today I will have to take it as I really need my car back ASAP . Is it safe or advisable to replace with a cheaper spring on the 197 cup will it cause any problems ?

It seems strange that the garage can't get hold of a genuine spring for you. Perhaps they don't know what they're looking for??

You can get one from Renault Parts Direct at the link here:

I would NOT advise to get just some random spring put in there in place of a genuine item. I appreciate that you need your car back but it's really not worth it to use non-standard springs - unless you were replacing all 4 with a full set, i.e. aftermarket springs like Eibach. Even a non-cup 197 spring would not be right - you need matching springs.

Where are you based Em 8023 ?

Sounds like the part could be on back order. I've had similar problems when ordering springs in the past so that could be the issue? Let me know your chassis and I'll see if we can find a spring for it.

Hi I'm from Anglesey in north wales I wanted to take it to a Renault specialist but there all too far away with me working 6 days a week I didn't have the time. I thought it wouldn't be right to just put any other springs on it but just wanted to make sure . I'll have to ring up the garage now and say I don't want them to try the parts that come today that I will wait till late tomorrow for the proper ones . I don't have the chassis number as its stuck in the garage since Tuesday . How much are the 2 front cup springs do you know? What colour are they ? He said the ones that were on it were 2 coloured can't remember what colours he said now though . Just wondering if it actually had genuine springs on it in the first place as I've only owned it just over a year so don't know a great deal of what it's had done to it

Best of luck with it all, I hope you manage to get it sorted. Keep us updated with how you get on.

If only I'd of know that before hand , I still haven't heard from garage yet so looks like they are waiting for the Renault springs just wish they would hurry up they have had my car since Tuesday afternoon , it's a long time with no car :worried:
How much roughly do garages charge for a yearly service ? I'm sure they have quoted me something ridiculously expensive for a non specialist garage but I didn't ask a price until I was passing my keys over I'm sure they said £300 or more depending how much oil it takes [emoji848]

Does the £300 include the fitting and supply of the spring? If its just for the service then I'd say it is a little on the high side for an annual service. The comment on the oil is a bit, erm, shoddy?? I can't really understand why a garage would charge more or less depending how much oil a car took... I mean any difference is likely to be a couple of litres and the cost of that would be minimal.

It just sounds like they are a bit useless to be honest... I can understand they might have difficulty in getting the right spring from their suppliers, however the suggestion of trying some random one is a bit unprofessional. Just tread carefully with them.

I would seriously be asking exactly what they're doing and how much it's going to cost before letting them do anything, I know you are in a rush to get the car back but you might as well make sure it's getting done properly the first time.

I find it strange how they were going to happily 'try' and fit a non genuine part, I wouldn't be letting anyone just try and fit something that isn't correct for the car.

Not sure on the service price, it all depends on what it needs as I've said before i'd be asking for a full quote and comparing it with prices elsewhere.

Had the car back now and he gave me a discount on the cost and also fitted the renault springs for me , the people were he was ordering from we're adamant that there springs were the correct ones over the phone , so might of been there mistake maybe but he will know for future that I want only original parts fitted on my car no matter what extra they cost . It cost £319 for full service and 2 front springs and he gave me a big sheet of the things that the service included plus he said he only charged for 1 hour labour so that sounds pretty reasonable I was expecting it to cost more since each spring cost £90 so it was a relief . He said he made the bloke reduce the price for each spring since he messed about for so long

That's good news, glad you got it all sorted in the end. And it does sound like the garage was messed about by their suppliers, so maybe they weren't so bad after all
