Aftermarket Head Unit Fitting

Am I missing an obvious trick here? I've just attempted to fit an aftermarket head unit into my car and, thanks to the 'box' that it effectively sits in behind the dash, there isn't any room for the wiring?

I bought an adaptor so that the steering column controls still work, but there doesn't seem to be space for it. The only space appears to be behind the heater controls so, if you try and feed the wiring up there, it just drops down and prevents the head unit sliding into position. Even without the adaptor, it doesn't seem to want to fit. Messing about with it has caused me to scratch the fascia that I had just painted, so it's not been very successful so far...

Am I just being a ham-fisted idiot or something?

If you remove the glovebox it makes it a lot easier, it's just a few torx bolts behind the dash trim, on the left hand side behind another piece of trim and inside the glovebox.

Yeah it’s a total pain in the butt. Depending on how much room you want you can pull the vents above the head-unit out too fairly easily to get another hand in there and pull the wires about.
