If i was you id buy a real crisp, tidy f1 or ff 197 making sure the cambelt was done recently as was the water pump. Ive never had an issue with the gearbox, i have an 07 so that might be why!
These cars seem reliable to me, especially compared to previous renaults! In terms of mpg i get 28 round town and on a 40 mile motorway trip if i was super steady at 65 id hit 41 mpg!
