When you say you connect to another output and it doesn't work, do you have an in menu option to turn the sub on or off? My alpine has that and without it turned on the subwoofer won't receive a signal. That's a possibility, so double check you've got the RCA's connected to the correct output...

You could try one of the super basic obd handheld devices, I got one like 10 years ago and it has been super useful. You could also try one of the obd apps with a bluetooth adaper for an inexpensive possible solution.

What is the stud kit like to fit? Do you just wind them in until they stop or do you have to measure how much you need exposed?

I'm also no expert but I would imagine each engine would need its own map, every engine has different tolerances etc. Who actually rebuilt it? Iirc its Andy at engine dynamics and he was very popular among the cliosport crowd back when I had my 172 cup.
