It is possibly that the mechanism needs greasing up and freeing off, otherwise they may be slower than usual and have restricted travel; do they go properly fast on the fastest setting? If not then it needs work.

Does it have a button on the actual handle? Does it have a metal sensor on the actual handle opposite the black square in the door? Assuming the answer to both of these questions is "no" then they aren't compatible with the comfort access system. You would find that if you removed the handle...

The black handles are from the basic model and wont work with keyless entry, they.don't have the necessary switch or sensor.

If its a 197 then HID/xenons were an option, but you may be able to find a cheaper aftermarket replacement. As mentioned above, the likely culprets are either ballast or bulb. The same parts are probably used by several manufacturers so a wider search for a solution may be beneficial.
