Sounds like the release bearing or it could be like mine and the actual friction plate could be broken. The latter is very rare how ever but it happens. If there's no crunches then I wouldn't say a new box is in order.
Only way to tell is to get everything out unfortunately.
1. Be it because its so loud it distorts when recorded or the equipment used was rubbish...that sounds **** to me.
2. Looked ridiculously uncontrollable to a racing driver, what chance does your average Joe have when on track?

More subtle changes there Rob that really are noticeable once done!
Seeing how nicer the hub looks with a lick of paint has made me decide to get that done.
