Difference between 172 and 197 bare engines?

Having a nightmare day. Driving into work this morning I heard a lovely tappety tap from the engine. Pulled over and sounds like top end. Nursed it 1/4 mile to work and confirmed this. I've yet to take anything apart, but have a few questions, hopefully someone knowledgeable with these engines...

Hi all, new 197 owner from Kent.

I'll keep my eye out for you. I work at KAP Nissan, but cycle most days so doubt you'll see my car.

How much oil use is excessive?

You'd be amazed at the consumption figures manufacturers give. Audi allow 1L every 1000 miles, so on 20,000m service intervals they say 20L of oil used is normal.....so a litre every 5k I'd say is fine!

not happy with sound after upgrade!

How are you mounting the speakers? Small things like whacking them in with 2 screws doesn't help. You need a good, airtight seal between the speaker and the mount. How have you wired them in? Twisting wires together? You need good, clean connections that are nice and tight. I've seen so many...

Don't skimp on spark plugs kids....

It's done 57k, so just over the mileage. I've used NGK BCR8ES plugs instead of platinum. Much cheaper, just have a shorter service life than the platinums.

    Dealer part only?

Most people call them drumsticks, but the technical term is inner track rod or steering rod. Couldn't tell you if they are genuine only, I wouldn't of imagined so.

Don't skimp on spark plugs kids....

I've no idea how, but on the cruise control at 70 you couldn't feel it! I'm going to pull the pre-cat off at the weekend and see if I can find anything.

Don't skimp on spark plugs kids....

****, I was very lucky! I was expecting to have to dig out my ph1 engine and get stripping.

Don't skimp on spark plugs kids....

Whilst driving home in my new 197 the other day, it developed a faint misfire. I was pretty certain it was a plug, as it was very faint and didn't bring on the eml. I removed the spark plugs, to be greeted with this on #2 cylinder. I was very lucky that it hasn't damaged anything, and...

Help me decide my tyres please.

I'd personally avoid Dunlop. I worked for Audi for 18 months, and have never known a tyre to go out of shape so quickly!

Hi all, new 197 owner from Kent.

Cheers all. I'd love to make the run on Sunday, but already have plans. I've not seen many about Ashford, or Kent for that matter. Only a blue 197 near to me. Even spending 3 days in London I only saw 1!

    clutch slave cylinder bleed point

If it helps, I do it like this. Most fwd Nissans use the same slave. You need another person to help. fill up the reservoir. pump the pedal a few times and top up fluid again. push down the clip and get a feel for the bleed point. It's about 10mm backwards from the fully fixed position...

    flexible exhaust sealant???

Use engine silicone sealant. Works at high temps and stays soft. Works perfectly, and doesn't melt.

Hi all, new 197 owner from Kent.

Hi folks, just thought I'd say hi. Just bought my first 197, a Nimbus Grey 2007 model. Pretty basic, no Recaro or climate unfortunately, but still very impressed with it. Disliked the vague steering, but now used to it. i miss the raw feeling of the 172's, but like the more civillised drive and...
