197 lower suspension balljoint prob???

Had an MOT fail, nearside lower suspension balljoint excessive play... Now done some digging and I just need the physical lower balljoint which is £50, plot thickens?... Just found out my mate at work, his brothers a mechanic and I've told him about my problem and he says he can get suspension wishbone with lower balljoint already attached and fit it for £165, now is this correct information that it's the right part? Does the wishbone connect to the underside of the suspension carrier? Reason I'm asking is apparently fitting just the balljoint is meant to be a pain and time consuming and this guy assures me the wishbone is the correct part the lower balljoint is already attached and would be an easier just plus it's probably gunna end up the same price but I get the wishbone aswell as the balljoint I need? Hope this makes sense.

Cheers lads

the above does not sound right - the ball joint comes as a complete hub assembly which is why its so expensive- people just get the ball joint replaced- but your garage needs to be prepared to heat up and cool down the hub to release and then install the new one.
i think the ball joint alone is £90.

That's what I thought, he showed me a picture of the part, it just didn't look right compared to the picture of where the lower balljoint is actually meant to fit...
Can see em on eBay for like £50-70...

Rsport sell lower ball joints for £44+vat. Plenty of people have bought them recently

Check with MOT tester if in doubt, there's an upper and lower ball joint on the hub carrier and another that screws into the wishbone itself... Lower ball joints are most common and yes there are a pig to do, there's a full guide in the how to section.

Well my other mechanic seems to be sorta avoiding me ATM, not sure he wants to do it, the MOT tester says it's the lower balljoint, he says the carrier and upper joint is fine, but then again I just told him about the other mechanic in the above post and he say the wishbone is what you need and the lower balljoint is attached to that which thinking about it seems like shit, from what problem I'm having with sqweeky steering at low speeds and play in steering its pointing towards lower joint trouble...

Won't let me view how to? Says I don't have permission?...

changed both left right I just pressed it out just have to be careful not to crack the hub carrier but you can just get replacement lower ball joints some garages seem to just call Renault and they say you have to have whole she-bang.. Getting in touch with people on hear saves you a lot of money and good knowledge :thumb:

Anybody know if Rsport are open this week? Tried ringing to order part and no answer...
Did you get these done? Where are you from? My mechanic just done mine, charged £70 per side and I supplied the balljoint which I got from rsport and it cost £119 for 2 balljoints including delivery. I’m from South Wales.

Didn't need to see this, I'm in North West of England, Burnley to be precise. Cost me £65 for balljoint from Rsport and ? Fit for £200!! He originally quoted me £90 plus vat! Said he sent the carrier off to be welded due to a crack that's why it cost Extra???? He must've damaged it freeing up old joint... Sorted either way thank fuck...

Wow £200 for fitting? That’s insane. And it’s possible he cracked your hub and if so then he should have replaced, not sure I’d feel comfortable knowing he’s welded them, I’m not great with cars mechanical wise but is it safe to weld them? As their alloy?

I thought that, papering over cracks can't be great for the integrity of the part, assumed he knew what he was doing, passed MOT, might just take to my other mechanic for a 2nd opinion, he were snowed under so was unable to really do the work (he'd never done a lower balljoint either and wasn't too keen)

Iv heard of alloy wheels being welded but the hub is a little worrying, maybe it’s fine tho like I said I wouldn’t know 100%. For the price he charged you could have bought the complete hub. These balljoints are a pain in the ass and they’ve stressed me out this last 2 weeks, in fact the bloody car is stressing me out haha

Love the car, just feel that Renault bum you dry from every angle possible unless you happen to live in Midlands where most of the 3rd party renualt specialists work... Nobody wanted to touch this repair near me, bout 9 different mechanics turned job down, cars got a clean bill of health ATM, nothing major but I rekon if in future sumat major goes I'm prob gunna get shut ...

I know exactly what you mean. I love the car, it’s my pride and joy but Renault do scew you over a bit. I’m actually looking to getting rid of mine, I bough it 4 years ago and actually have kids now so I need a 5 door really, spoke to a garage yesterday about a 2010 focus zetec s, something a little sensible but the dealer only offered me £2000 for my Clio haha it’s a 2006 but only has 60k on the mileage and it’s very clean for its age, had loads of work done this year including balljoints, cambelt, brake and shocks so if a decent car con s along then maybe I will offer it to a member in here first, someone who knows how to appreciate it
