Ultra Red 200 Irish Revival

First of all I would to say hi from Ireland to all of the community on here,I joined earlier this year when I got the notion to rescue a Red 200 that I thought needed saving:smiley:

I have had some interesting cars and builds over the years mainly Jap turbo powered RWDs and some German stuff too

Having made some grown up purchases:grinning: I scaled back and bought a Suzuki Swift Sport for trackday's to keep my toe in the water lol

Great fun car and a great cap to enjoy and learn the Ring as I have done in the past.

Only problem with the Swift is it lacked a little bit of punch so I was lift with the do I tune a very expensive engine for little gain or look elsewhere. . .

Covid hit and I started looking elsewhere and hit on Mk 3 Clio 200/ Cups

A cousin of mine ran R3 Clio rally cars for years with great success and it always punched above its weight in its class

So I said what the hell lets give the Clio a go

And here's what the Irish Used car search turned up

It was taty around the edges and drove reasonably apart from 3rd being absent:openmouth:

Anyways I took a punt on it and started tidying it and assessing what it was in need of,a lot it turns out:disrelieved:

Jobs list is bigger than I imagined but I'm committed now to saving it lol

UK salt rash underneath,Gearbox overhaul,Brake overhaul,fu*ked exhaust, timing belt not done etc etc

So I will share my progress of saving this poor little 200 as I can some tasty things lie ahead for it

So after a couple of days cleaning it as it was so dirty and grubby inside and out it came up pretty good

But I knew from driving it I would not be as impressed when I got it up in the air to examine further

Can anyone help with advice on uploading better quality images? I used Photobucket years ago but Imgur seemed easy but surely there is a cleaner way?

Some of the areas in need of attention

Gearbox- No 3rd gear and sometimes 4th too, clutch a little high for my liking
Exhaust - manifold flexis fooked and lots of other cracks
Suspension - top mount,broken spring,tired shocks,bottom balljoint
Brakes - Calipers seized, paint in bad condition
Engine - Timing belt was ment to have been done recently yet on inspection condition(small nick and wear says otherwise)
Interior - car was used as a family car but a family of chickens would have treated it with more respect I'm sure although I got it cleaned in a day or so
Underbody - as expected with a UK car road salt has attacked the aluminium and other components under the car

Plans

Refresh and replace as needed and strengthen and improve where I can so I will be a decent trackday tool and I might leave it road legal

In was hopeful that all it would have needed was a good service and a couple of bits at the start but was wishful thinking

Now I frequent my local Renault dealer and know the DPD delivery guy very well

I should have said this thread will be pic heavy:thumb:

There's an option in imgur to copy the url for the image, then you paste it in here using the paperclip icon in your reply box on here (think that's how it works, it's been a while since I've used it).

Cheers,I shall try that next time

I'm in Tyrone, Cookstown were are you based I have a reasonable amount of parts more 197 stuff I would check the radiator sub frame if its 09 and you have corrosion the front subframe maybe rusted through mine was replaced 6 years ago and the other week went to unbolt the plastic undertray and the subframe broke off around the bolt and spun round with it very unimpressed with Renault at the moment. The top mounts there are two sizes that changed in 2010 there will be other things need doing like taking the scuttle cover off and unblock the drains they block overfill damage the wipers mechanically and electrically so give them a check why not join the forum its about £5 a year or there is other one off payment options you will get access to adds and the how to section but I think you are reasonable enough mechanic but it's always good to see what's involved. raptor6767 sells a lot of balljoints etc. the lower one especially has a rubber boot that can extend the life as the originals are exposed to dirt and can go quite quickly.

Hey man,I'm in Longford. I might take you up on the parts end of things.
Yes I have done quite a bit with Renault's on the Diesel side mainly over the years pumps, injectors etc and the odd Trafic gearbox too lol
I said I would give the car a good tear down to see exactly what needed addressing to try maintain and future proof it going forward
And I will join the forum too :thumb:

Serious progress!!! Not alot of these knocking about in Ireland, I'm in Cork myself. Looks a lovely car! Best of luck with it.

Cheers lad
No they are a rare sight alright

This was suppose to be a cheap track tool but now its turning into a bit of a handful:grinning:

In the name of good F**k you are not holding back on it I would have a 003 gearbox which has all the lower ratios but it is still connected to the engine in a 197 F1 which I have bought to take the front seats out of. Your box should be 024 or 031 it's engraved on the end casing or the sticker might still be on it. I need to get it inside so I can break it and scrap what's left over

If the radiator support is corroded then contact renault uk and ask if they would replace it under their 12 year anti corrosion warranty.

Its starting to blister alright but it certainly isn't as bad I have seen on here and was thinking of fabricating one out of aluminium but yes I will contact my N.I dealer and ask politely :grinning:
