Oil question

Hopefully just a quick answer...

Before I picked up my 197 last Friday from a Renault branch. They done a service on the car. They have just sent the service sheet to me (Forgot to ask for it when i picked up the car)

They have used Elf competition ST 10w40 Oil. I know they recommend 5w40.

Would this cause a problem or is it fine?

Matt

I'm not sure if it will be problematic but I'd want the right elf 5w in my engine!!

They should of used the 5w as you said and its Renault too not just a random garage!!! I'd take it back and ask them what are doing!

I have just emailed the Renault branch. I have had quite a few problems with this Renault branch.... :jumpon:

It should be ok but nxt time get 5-40 in it
Look in the SEARCH engine and you will find your answer

complain and get them to put the correct oil grade in

or put it a different way - if the engine goes bang and YOU had put 10w40 in it do you think they would accept warranty on it....

stop excepting below standard workmanship :shout:

watched a friend of mine doing an oil change on his S3 the other day and noticed he was using 0w40. What benefit will this have over 5w30 that renault use?

Very good point.

It sounds like you have proof on paper that RENAULT have used the wrong oil?!

Had a email from the Renault Branch...

I have spoken with my Service Manager and our Renault Master technician regards your enquiry.

The competition ST 10w40 Semi synthetic oil that is in your vehicle is an ELF lubricant recommended by the Renault network.

This will not cause any damage to the engine now or in the future and will not affect the performance of the vehicle.

Between Renault and ELF they suggest that all of our petrol engines can use either Competition ST 10w-40 or Evolution SXR 5w-40 unless in "severe conditions" which is not the case in our country.

Neither our technician nor company has made a mistake. As a Renault Sport specialist if we believed your vehicle would be affected by using this type of oil it would not have been used.

No "sorry for the misunderstanding". Just a typical "We're right your wrong.." email from Renault.

Personally I'd ask them if thats the understanding they have with ELF why didn't they write that in the manual? But then again I am a moany ******* lol.

I love how they use things like this to their advantage, like Si said if the shoe was on the other foot they wouldn't consider your warranty claims...

right lets get this right then....

they need to read what renault put in the manual pg1...

10w40 st is for "normal" use "all petrol engines" - ie the cheaper oil or other renualt approved oil for normal use

5w40 evolution sxr - "optimum" performance

5w 40 excellium ldx - "optimum performance and maximum protection in the most severe conditions"

sorry i dont agree with their reasoning - you have the "cheaper oil in"

not only that but the wrong grade does have an effect on fuel economy....

may i just add a friend of mine had the same issue with their 197 with the wrong grade - they took it back and complained and the correct grade was put in it!!!

Thanks Fox,

When i get in, i shall have a look in the manual and send them a reply.

I have to say, it does not fill me with confedence when it comes to taking the car in for its next service.

It's not like, i like complaining. I just wish they give their customers what they are paying for.

I have had quite a few dealings with this particular branch and even the Reg sale manager has tried to tell me false information.

Part of me wants to take the car to a Ren specailist (Ktec / 519 / Motorline) and send Renault's branch the bill!

Renault if your reading this sort it out:thumbdown:

I do not like to be made to look like a fool. And even though i do not know the "ins and outs" of the Clio 197, i can certainly read.

This is my response:

Thank you for your email regarding the discrepancy with the Oil / Oil filter service.

1. I have been reading the Official Renault sport forum and the "ask the experts" page. And all information regarding the oil change for the Renault sport 197 is as follows:
Renault cs responds
Hi, Renault recommends for Clio Renault sport 197 only use ACEA A3/B4 standard, 5W40 grade oil (or 0W40 depending on the external temperature) always consult your maintenance and service booklet or vehicle handbook for further information.

2. I also checked my Renault Clio manual that is supplied with all cars. Below is what the manual is stating:
10w40 st is for "normal" use "
5w40 evolution sxr - "optimum" performance

Under models it clearly states Renault sport Clio 3 2.0 16v - to use 5w40 only.

3. Further to this, I have also spoken to the Service Department at R.Sport Renault, Wimbledon. The service technician advised me to only use 5w40 Elf or equivalent (5w40 oil) as stated in the Clio Manual. I also asked about using 10w40 oil instead, the response was not to use it. "They must put in the manual 5w40 for a reason"

I look forward to your reply.

Nicely and correctly put mate.make them do a proper job with correct products

Thanks Roy,

I am looking forward to their response. From speaking to R.sport and them saying only use 5w40. I certainly know who i belive!
