Loss of power!

My car lost quite a lot of power on the way home from work last night. Car was warmed up for 5 mins before leaving work as usual. Was fine for the 1st couple of miles then suddenly after stopping at a set of lights it had bugger all power. No engine lights or strange noises, felt and sounded very much like the exhaust was blocked as it felt like it was being held back and the exhaust note got louder like it was struggling. Think the exhaust is fine though as I was under there last week and it seemed fine. Pulled over and switched it off and back on again and it seemed a little better, won't know for sure until I drive it again this morning.

Any ideas?

Just been out to test it this morning and same thing again. Was fine for a mile or so then went completely flat across the rev range, especially after 4k. Switched it off and back on and it was ok again for another mile or so.

Still no engine lights or miss firing. Just the car really holding back with an increased howl/drone from the exhaust.

197 ownership isn't turning out that great, only had it a few weeks and have developed 2 different knocks and now this. Went with the 197 as my 172 Cup was bullet proof and gave me no problems at all. Maybe I should have stuck with my S3.

No mods at all, removed the noise trumpet on the airbox last week but its been fine about that. Will put the trumpet back on today and see how it is but can't see it being that tbh as when fitting aftermarket induction kits you do away with this valve anyway. Presumed its logged a fault as it seems ok again after switching off and back on again. Have booked it in to my local Renault specialist this Saturday morning for both the knocking and loss of power.

Don't think so as it its ok again after switching on and off. Put the trumpet back on and its been ok since, don't understand that though?

I heard removing the trumpet can bring up a light/fault. I left mine in just unplugged and capped the vacuum hose

+1.

I'm running the V6 Airbox and although I've removed the trumpet, I've had to leave the vacuum pipe plugged into the Inlet and plug the other end that used to go into the Trumpet. Not had any problems with this, just check that the hose is fully on properley at the Inlet end.

Probably limp mode

Not sure as wouldnt that show an engine light? And not sure it was as restricted as a limp mode should be?

Capped my hose and left it all plugged in so should have been ok? All i did was remove the actual trumpet, left the electrical plug and vac hose in.

Checked this morning and it was all still capped properly.

Put trumpet back in earlier and its been ok so far for around 5 miles but i'm guessing that is coincedence as capping the hose should keep the ECU happy.

Can a faulty dephaser pulley pull the VVT back?

Had it scanned today and it had a couple of faults logged regarding the pulley, mechanic reckons it could be faulty.

The Dephaser Pulley is what enables/controls the VVT as far as I know, so if that's having issues that could be what you need to fix...

What fuel do you have in her? My issues which are similar (although I had a noise a few times it happened but not all the time) seems to be fixed after 3 tanks of super from my local BP garage...

What are the benefits of removing the trumpet to the right of the arbox?

Nothing apart from a nicer induction note.

Always run super of some kind. Had the car clip tested and it showed 3 instances of a dephaser pulley fault, which as far as i know controls the VVT. So a fault with that may well be holding the timing back, which would add up to how my car felt when it lost power.

Cost is around £500 - £600 for Cambelt, AUX belts and dephaser pulley with Renault or similar. Got a mate (good mechanic) doing mine for £425.

are you sure its not meaning the control solenoid? the one next to no1 spark plug coil?

Has you mate got the renault cam locking kit, as there are many non renault decent garages that end up fitting them wrong. Just a wird of warning, mate.
