Going to main dealer for MOT?

I haven't checked the price yet but would you go to a main dealer for the MOT or is it best to go to a local independent?

I could do with getting the air-con re-gassed at the same time and think Renault will probably have better equipment for this than an independent local garage?

To be honest I think most dealers use someone else to do the a/c work. That's the impression I got anyway. Not sure where to get my car MOT'd, it'll be it's first one. Not due until January, but I was going to get it done nice and early (about a month) so if anything is wrong with it, Renault can do it under warranty! I suppose it depends on how much they're going to charge you mostly though. No harm in ringing around a few places first. Had my last 1.2 Clio's first MOT at a Renault Specialists.

I would expect most dealers to have their own a/c kit tbh, even my parents little "in the sticks" garage has one. Also I have had to visit a number of main dealer workshops through work, and most had a/c machines. Plus with Renaults the a/c is related to the engine management, so it would be a real pain diagnosing problems if the dealer had to send the car elsewhere to have the a/c regassed.

I've never heard of council MOT centres, unfortunately there isn't one for about 15 miles and Renault is just around the corner.

I've booked in now, £39 inc. for the MOT and £49 inc. for the air con regas which includes dye in the system and leaving it to run a while to check for leaks.

Also need to get a new keycard as I lost my spare, programming is £43 and am waiting on cost of the key. I think this is probably quite cheap compared to prices I've seen on here.

All prices are from Archie moss in Loughborough, very friendly and informative on the phone.

EDIT: Keycard cost £95 +VAT +Programming at £43 ......ouch! £157 for a new key does take the piss a bit
