Gear box oil

Right, i think reno have gave me the wrong gearbox oil . The box seems too be temperamental now and then. Was fine before oil was changed.

i havent got the bottles but paper work got says 04M030 Tranself NFJ but ashume they do all types different oil for different boxes

Maybe i should try some fully synthetic.

Hello, I didn't want to start a new thread on this, I wanted to find out if the correct oil for the 197 (2008 gearbox with longer 5th/6th gear) is the NFP or NFJ? They are both rated for TL4 gearbox, but NFJ seems to say something about extra protection for brass synchromesh rings and there was a post in here stating around 2012 that the NFJ is the right one. However my specialist asked their supplier in Renault and they stated that they are providing NFP. Does anyone have more insight in this?

Are you saying we should not be using Fuchs Sintofluid then? Opie says its GL5.

Google: GL-5 is not necessarily backward-compatible in synchro-mesh transmissions which are designed for a GL-4 oil: GL-5 has a lower coefficient of friction due to the higher concentration of EP additives over GL-4, and thus synchros can not engage as effectively. Also, transmissions which explicitly call for GL-4 oil may have been designed around this lower concentration of EP additives and thus may contain yellow metal parts which GL-5 will corrode.

interesting: http://www.widman.biz/uploads/Transaxle_oil.pdf

personally i'd play it safe and go GL4.

interesting read..thumbs up..:thumbup1:

Can someone confirm that it definately must be a GL4 oil? If Tranself NFJ is the standard oil, that is GL4+ according to the tech sheet I found. Confused!!

i was confused too when trying to select an oil. Renault's recommended GL4+ is probably OK. i wasnt and still am not sure exactly what GL4+ is. Google wasnt saying much and the only facts i had to go on were the box has brass syncros and GL5 is not good for them. which is why I opted for GL4.

Renault used to recommend GL5 for TL4 boxes according to this technical doc. may explain why some people have had problems.

I went for the Elf NFJ GL4+ - the datasheet http://www.totaloil.com.au/pages/content/nt0000c9da.pdf says it's approved by Renault for the TL4 box. As I understand it (and am more than happy to be corrected), GL4+ means an oil that will satisfy GL4 and GL5 - it's equivalent to "GL4/GL5" labelling that you see on some oils.

Nielsen CDG have the NFJ for £7.19 for a litre bottle, I got a 5 litre bottle as it meant I definitely had enough for two changes. The quality of the shift after changing the oil was night and day.
