bugger :(

OK so I have been keeping an eye on insurance and it seems its finally bitten back. Insurance quotes are £1666 at the cheapest and my renewal isn't until may so its likely to go up again. So the Clio has to go in May as its just too much money when saving for a house. I'd be looking to get something for £4-£5k as when I trade it in I could pay the rest of the car off (not too much owed on it).

What can you guys recommend? I've had 3 cars MK2 Clio 1.2 16V, MK3, Clio 1.2 TCE and Mk3 Clio 2.0 197.

Obviously if I can i'd like to start getting away from Clio's but i'd like to get something else half decent looking! (be hard to match the 197 for looks though :worried:)

three I have found that I fancy are

Ouch, it's really not fair that insurance prices have rocketed so much recently. I'm dreading my renewal in August :worried:

Out of the 3 cars you posted, the honda and BMW are definitely the better choices. I'd guess BMW will be better to drive but the honda will be cheaper to run

If I ever downsized it would be to a Twingo 133, they would be a bit more than 5k though. Another option would be a Suzuki Swift Sport, I like my hatches!

I wouldn't worry too much I know there have been many threads on insurance recently but most people seem to have come out ok. I think that mine was going to be the same - when I looked in Nov the quotes were a lot more than at renewal despite all the snow and accidents that happened at that time. Keep looking and I am sure you will find something thats cheap enough.

Cheers benw - F1 thats true but don't forget I live in NI insurance is crap here at the best of times due to the history of this.... lovely.. country

well out of those i would have the honda first - its not the best diesel engine as its not theirs but they are good on fuel and relaible

bmw next but be careful with the enignes - they are good but depending on which one it is the inlet swirl flaps can drop in the engine and blow it up - there are also other little issues with parts on the engines

citroen - tend to fall apart - but the diesels are good as its the same as the focus 1.6tdci

i have been thinking of getting rid of the barge and 197 and having something like the twingo 133 as an only car.....but i am still thinking yet!

and suzuki swift - worth being on a wish list - very good junior hot hatch
