Timing belt and water pump

Hi mates,

My clio has reached its 5 year service. I'm getting the timing belt done but the garage said they would price up a water pump because people usually have it done at the same time.

Is this worth it, has anyone had it done and what reasonable price should I expect?

Thanks

It is common to replace the water pump at the same time on a lot of cars, only because whilst you've got the belt off you may as well do the pump at the same time (obv only if the pump is driven my the cam belt) - if the pump goes in the future (usually bearings) it will be as expensive as having another cam belt change and that's if if doesn't cause any other damage.

As for price I've lost touch a bit as I tend to do all my own work. Also depends on where you take it... if I was to not do the work myself I would want someone I trust to do it properly rather than base it on cost.

1. it's pretty important to change the pump as the cambelt runs on it directly, it's just like changing an idler in that sense. I only do an all in price for this to include the pump, i dont give the option

2. are you using a specialist with the correct locking tools? I wouldn't ever let a general garage touch the timing on one of these, they just dont know the engines

Hi mates,

Thanks for getting back to me. The only Renault Specialist we have in Chesterfield that isn't a Stealer is http://www.frontlinescitroen.co.uk/

They quoted £360 for the timing belt £250 for the MOT and full service.

They told me £117 for the water pump to be done at the same time.

Are those locking tools different to a 172/182 another garage I had quotes from who I used before had only done jobs on the 172 / 182.

How could I check if these guys at frontlines have done a 197 before? :/

BTW my Stealership Gordan Lamb quoted a bargain 10% off their £1220 price to get it to £1100 for the timing belt.

They also waffled on for about 5 minutes that its about 'The BIGGEST job' you could possibly ever have to do to your car.

Hi Mate,

I have had my 197 for a month now and a couple of weeks ago I thought I would phone up my local dealership to see when a normal cam belt n water pump would cost and when it's normally due. My 197 has 35,800 on it, so pretty low tbh, however it is 2month overdue it's 5 yr time period. They said it's every 5years or 70k whichever comes first.

Basingstoke (where I live) Renault dealership they quoted me £820 incl VAT and 20%. Winchester however the next nearest one charged me £900.

This would incl Water Pump, Cambelt change and 6 hours labour.

I am probably get it changed next year when it reaches 46k as I don't do that many miles, it's mainly urban driving, but with a few motorway journeys now and again.

It's a catch 22 really, I want it done by a dealership as it's one of the vital things that run your engine and can be a very expensive job if it goes wrong. However, an independant garages are £300-£400 less, but u could have less backup and difficult to argue your case if anything goes wrong i.e. belt slips or pump goes.

Hope this helps bud

Cheers,

Chris

LOL, I charge £465 all in with water pump, and both full belt kits

I've also rectified the work of dozens of dealerships that do these wrong, and this is the experience of many specialists

That is interesting to know mate. It must be mega frustrating when you have paid high dealer prices and get a faulty job done on your car.

Shame you weren't nearer me mate. £495 is a good price considering it's a Renault sport and parts are more expensive.

Without a doubt I would much rather use you, but unfortunately it's just too impractical for me to get the car to you.

I know you posted a 'LOL' but that Frontlines quote seems reasonable as you sound like you price really well and its only a tiny bit more than yours.

Considering timing belt and water pump comes to £477 and they did quote £17 for the accessories belt but I forgot to mention it earlier.

I don't think I've got much choice going elsewhere :worried:

As for Chris Racer2011 I understand what your saying, I bought my car last year with a higher mileage (62,000) expecting to reach the 72,000 before it was 5 years old, but I've only done 3,000 miles in it, and by the looks of things will do the same this year.

I won't however leave it or recommend you do either. True story of what happened to my brother, it's on the Seloc forum somewhere too. His cam belt service date fell on the weekend, he spotted it looking through his car folder while getting his licence out for a trackday that weekend. Instead of trying to get it in that Friday and hope they could sort it for the track day Saturday he booked it in for the Monday. Sods law, it went and it was actually the last lap of the day. His bill was even worse because RAC worked out he had tracked it by the tires and wouldn't take it home.
