Stubby / Shortened Aerial

Contemplating whether a shortened aerial would A: look better and B: effect radio signal

Has anybody fitted one themselves? I was looking at the following:

I've just fitted a stubby one bout 3 inches. Not the one in the link I must say. Signal is OK does lose it for short periods (seconds) every now and then when it didn't previously.

I bought one from Halfords, looks much better and the signal is just as bad as it was before!
