Removing the wheels

I have a boggo extending wheel nut wrench, from Halfords i think. This weekend I'd like to get the wheels off and clean all the arches, "attempt" to strip and clean the brakes, and re-fit.

However, am I ok removing and re-fitting the wheels with only this boggo tool. Will I require a proper adjustable torque wrench to ensure all the wheel nuts are correctly fitted, and not loose/too tight.

Or am i just being stupid? ;/

You meen u have a wrecking bar to get the wheel nuts off? Just dont overtighten them mate and u will be fine

remove with the "big" bar

and tighten with the standard "wheel brace" - its short/small for a reason - so the "average" person cant over tighten the bolts like you would if you used the "big bar" wrench

you have my number if you get stuck

i am down evesham over the weekend

Thanks Si, and everyone else, for the guidance. Bit of a noob and mega-worrier when it comes to anything mechanical with my car.

Evesham - you'll probably be driving past mine on the way down/up. Pop in and say hi if you like. Always welcome

You need to get roughly the right about of torque on the wheel nuts, too much and they'll get stuck, too little and they risk coming undone.

You can get a torque wrench for ~£25 so I'd just get one and make sure the job is done properly.

Have you got locking wheel nuts? Have they been off the car before?

I could only get one of mine off at the weekend. The locking nut pops out quite easily unless you can get a lot of force pushing into towards the wheel, but this is a recipe for disaster and I scratched one of my wheels.

Had to take it to the dealer in the end. Mechanic tried with an extended bar but admitted defeat and got a gun.

So moral of the story is, be very careful with locking nuts!

I bought a impact gun with a full socket set at the weekend for £12. Only a cheap one but I'll hook it up to the air compressor and give it a shot sometime. Wasn't able to get the wheels off this weekend as I didn't have time.

I only ever put the nuts on finger tight, it makes then easier to remove the next time

Yeah, right LMAO!
