Fuel pump failure

Evening,

My 197 wouldn't start last night after I filled it up with petrol. It was turning over but not firing up. Got my garage to look at it today, the fuel pump is only operating at 1 bar and it should be operating at around 3.5 bar so the pump needs replacing. I see a few other people on here have had to have the pump replaced too. It's costing me £425 to get it replaced....

I had that on my 197 at about 65k-66k miles. £425 is about right if that includes parts. The place I got mine done (under warranty) dropped the rear axel and fuel tank to clean it and replaced the pump at the same time! I found if I parked my car on a decline nose first it would start though!

They are charging me £175 for the pump, £29 for a nut which they said they recommend replacing when taking the fuel tank out, and £150 labour. So the VAT on top takes it to about £425.

First can I have your old fuel pump please. Second, why does the fuel tank need to come out. Thought you can access the pump from under the rear seat. Its a tight fit removing it from the access point so I'll be just making the access hole slightly bigger to remove it....Can seal the access hole with silicone. Easy....Dropping the tank is overkill.

You can access it from above the rear seat but I had my tank cleaned as I thought it was dodgy fuel. It must be how the ren techs say it should be done as everyone keeps saying that they need to remove the fuel tank to replace..

I guess some people wont want to butcher the hole.....but making the hole wider to get at the pump makes more sense than dropping the fuel tank????

my thoughts exactly!

Renault took out my fuel tank etc. took them bloody ages, but they did order the wrong parts (as usual). Although I think if I saw them taking a Drexel to the rear bench to widen the whole and save time I might have had words lol.

Then I can get one like yours

Thats not a problem Mr shakey-hand. My friend and ace leccy Steve C has found a place that builds fuel pumps to your own spec. I was hoping that a fellow member would donate his so that I could send that one first to try and then I'd share the knowledge!!!

I'll get you a pic.

The later cup car shells have a bigger hole for this same reason, so you can get at the pump without taking the car to bits.

It's about two inches bigger towards the front of the car.
