Differing tyres

I had a new set of Pirelli P7000 tyres put on the rear only a month ago and it seems they are now very hard to get hold of, gone through Blackcircles and Camskill and rang a number of garages. They have an almost identical tread pattern to the Hankook V12's and this is what I wanted on the back a month ago but couldn't get hold of any in time for the MOT.

If i can't find the Pirelli's what are your thoughts on having two different tyres on the front compared to the rear!?

Cheers

i've got bridgestones on the rear and continentals on the front, with no adverse effects, i will be changing the front to bridgestones when the time comes, cheaper and same performance for how i drive it.

I've always been told front to back differing is fine, side to side is a no no.

Yeah this is fine. When I bought my vRS it had mismatching tyres on the front. The previous owner said he had a puncture and that was one only tyre that was in stock. I've had mismatching on old cars before so didn't think it was a problem. Driving it home spiritedly the car was all over the place and it left me thinking wtf have I bought!

Asked a mechanic friend to look it all over and everything was fine except for the tyres. He's really particular about tyres and said that for a start both tyres were ditchfinder brands and that mismatching on the front was a big no no. He recommended me a set of Bridgestone and see how they were. They transformed the car. Car handled much better, you could feel the grip and it wouldn't squirm under braking. The was my first lesson in how cheap tyres and mismatching is a big no no on anything with a little bit of power.

OK thanks guys, Pirelli have replaced the P7000 with the Zero Nero but a local garage has managed to get me two from somewhere and because the garage he sourced them for wanted rid of them he is only charging £165 fitted for the two, better than the £208 i was charged for the rear two!!!

Good result there. P-zero nero isn't the replacement though, they've been making these for aaages, a good 6 or 7 years

Just the usual Bu!!s!t from the other garages then, obviously because they couldn't find the P7000 and a guy in a backstreet garage could haha

I've got Conti's on the front and Hankook on the back. Conti's will be replaced with Hankook's if I can get some when these are shot, probably in the next couple of months. I can't wait to change them, they seem to be terrible compared to what I remember the Hankook's were when they were on the front.

Camskill for the Hankooks mate, you cannot beat that price anywhere, shame they didn't have them when i really needed them!

That is a good price, I'm going to ring around nearer the time when they need changing to see what the cheapest way of doing it is. I think the 2 I had last year wer £76 supply and fit, which makes them probably cheaper than buying and getting someone to fit them. But as I say, it all depends on how much places want to fit them. I think it used to be £12.50 at my local tyre place.

i wouldn't ever buy a car which the owner had ditchfinder 3000 tyres on, let alone mis-matching ditchfinders!! it just goes to show how the owner has treated/respected their car...

Quite often you find that when people sell their cars they stick whatever will get them through an MOT on the car at the cheapest price though. Either them or the dealer.

when i brought my integra i test drove it with dunlop direzza semi slick tyres fitted, granted they were getting a bit low but the dealer was told to change them to pass the mot. so they fitted maxis tyres to the front with out telling me and left the direzzas on the back,

it was the most scary drive ive ever had no front end grip at all safe to say i changed them back to track tyres and binned the maxis'

bit of an extream comparison but it goes to show the difference it can make to a car messing wit tyres
