Classic renaultsport pricing again!

So went to renault and got a free health check today, knew a ball joint was on its way out so they found it obviously. They quotes £589 just for the near side hub ball joint, i know it comes as one but come on? They sell the ball joint on ebay or k-tec for 60/70 quid so might go down that route and get another garage to fit it, i guess there has been a few people done this? whats your experiences/alternatives? I know there are threads on this but just want to know exactly what othere people get quoted because i think this is a ball park figure.

Also got quoted 39.99 for 2 sidelights bulbs to get fitted, ouch.

Not just Renault... industry wide to a certain extent I'm afraid.

For example... Took a car for an MOT (offered at a discount to pull the punters in) a couple of years back (Ibiza tdi 130 sport) at a major franchise and got told all four brake disks and pads needed replacing. No way!!!!!!!!!!! So tell them "no" and when I go to pick the car up, not even an advisory on the MOT about them. Went on the do another 20k and pass a further 2 MOTs without a single comment before I sold it on.

As you have suggested yourself, find a decent "specialist" and get a quote.

Good luck.

I suppose you are right, i just think its madness. Also annoys me that i have autoprotect mechanical gold warranty but they say that this £589 hub is 'wear and tear'
Thanks i will try, my nearest specialist is edinburgh i think aswell and thats a 3 hour drive.

My car needed a ball joint, new shock, new spring, wheel bearing and a steering arm. Renault wanted £450 for parts and £600 labour!!!!!
i got local guys I trust to do it for about 450 including labour and that's including the cost of sourcing some of the parts myself. I was only charged £100 for labour. Sort of felt sorry for them because they were working on the car for six and a half hours but I've been using them for years so they get a lot of money out of me.

The place I use has Renault trained mechanics anyway. No way would I paying their labour costs. They don't always do the best job anyway imo

Wish I had £10 for every time that I've heard the cop out "wear and tear" on a third party warranty claim! If you think about it, they can weasle their way out of a fair few (most???) claims this way.
EG. Warrant Wise which says:
"Warrantywise cover your car for the sudden and unexpected mechanical or electrical failure of a Part to operate properly (due to wear and tear) which, in our opinion, is likely to lead to it breaking down and stopping working."
Will try and wriggle out of a claim by stating "failure due to sudden wear and tear". WTF is that!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! If you don't believe me, read some of the reviews of people that have had claims knocked back... some are beyond belief.
You may guess from my comments that I don't really like these sorts of warranties (or companies that sell them).

You sound to be in a similar position to me. other than the local Arnold Clark, I too would face a couple of hundered (+) mile round trip to find anyone that I would actually trust with my car (live in SW Scotland).

Again. Good luck.

Did you pay extra for the cover ? Or did it come with the car ? If you paid extra i would be finding out what exactly is covered ? You should have been given a manual with warranty cover stating exactly what is and what is not covered.
